2 H r of ipp ilte Problems caused by contamination Over 80% of all oil & fuel system failures are caused by contaminants in the fluid. Even when no immediate failures occur, high contamination levels will sharply decrease operating efficiency. Contamination is defined as any substance which is foreign to a fluid system and damaging to its performance. Contamination can exist as a gas, liquid or solid. Solid contamination, generally referred to as particulate contamination, comes in all sizes and shapes and is normally abrasive. High contaminant levels accelerate component wear and decrease service life. Worn components, in turn contribute to inefficient system operation, seizure of parts, higher fluid temperatures, leakage, and loss of control. All of these phenomena are the result of direct mechanical action between the contaminants and the system components. Contamination can also act as a catalyst to accelerate oxidation of the fluid and spur the chemical breakdown of its constituents. The table on the left demonstrates the human eye s inability to see below 40 micron i.e. microscopic, harmful particulate in oils, fuels and fluids are invisible. 3 H r of ipp ilte The need for High Performance Filtration The Hippo range of filtration housings and systems, simultaneously removes both water and solid contaminants from a wide range of fuels and oils. In applications where extreme levels of solids and/or moisture are present, various cartridge options are available Utilising cellulose, VDM Filtersorb, synthetic media or polypropylene elements, these systems provide unparalleled filtration capacity which aids in reducing maintenance, keeping fuel or oils clean and prolonging equipment life. 4 Why should I use a Hippo filter? FACT: Effective filtration will extend the life of your machinery and maintain the oil cleanliness of your equipment. How often do you change your oil? It is a well known fact that oil and fuel cleanliness is critical. It is not uncommon for large machines to dispose of oil on a monthly basis. By fitting a Hippo filter to your equipment, oil drain intervals can be increased to 100,000 miles for heavy goods commercial vehicles. Extend oil life up to 10 times: By fitting a Hippo filter, you can ensure your oil (lubricating, hydraulic or gear oil) remains clean and dry. This will ensure that the oil remains in excellent condition for up to 10 times longer. Why do I need a Hippo filter? Standard in-line filters mostly filter down to 20 micron efficiency. The most harmful contaminants in oil are the sub 5 micron particles, often which are also the most abrasive. The Hippo filter is capable of removing harmful solid contaminants down to less than 1 micron. Simple Installation: The Hippo filter can be fitted quickly and simply by approved mechanics. Water and Solid Particulate Removal The Hippo Filters high performance cartridges allow for the removal of ultra-fine particulates and debris, thereby immediately reducing the risk of contamination-induced damage to parts and machinery. The Hippo series can be used to enhance the life and performance of other, more expensive system filters. The wear and tear of hoses and fittings is also greatly reduced due to the effective removal of harmful particulate. With today s machinery operating under increasingly fine tolerances, the removal of particulate and moisture down to acceptable levels is paramount. As the Hippo system effectively removes water from the oil/fuel, the risk of fluid degradation is significantly reduced along with inevitable associated down-stream problems. 5 How does the Hippo Filter work? Filter cartridge: SDFC(W2)Disc: Constructed from high quality, densely wound, long fibre cellulose filtration media Utilises both absorption and adsorption filtration principles. Extends oil change intervals up to 10 times Does not remove additive packages The long fibre cellulose filters attract the water formed in the oil caused by combustion process or condensation. These fibres will absorb water from the oil in a sponge like action. At the same time, the cellulose media rejects the oil molecules which are then directed through the tight windings of the filter cartridge. As the oil passes through the cartridge, abrasive carbon particulate, wear metals and silicon are removed from the oil through an adsorption process. If these particles are not removed they will act as liquid sandpaper and destroy sensitive components. By effectively removing water and solid particulate, the production of acids is minimised. Acid formations result in the oil degrading and causing excessive corrosive wear on components. Certain components are purposely placed in lubrication oil to make it more effective. These additives include dispersants, detergents, oxidation and rust inhibitors, metal de-activators, pour point depressants, anti-foaming and gelling additives. These additives are held is suspension and their levels can be critical to maintaining the oils beneficial qualities. How does By-pass filtration work? The Hippo filter housing is installed in the system. The filter operates by taking a set volume of the oil or fuel and purifies it as it passes through the Dual Density filter media. Moisture Dirt particles The flow is configured in such a way that only 10-15% of the total system flow passed through the filter. It is in this slow, deliberate filtration process that the microparticles and moisture are effectively removed. By-pass loop applications The Hippo filter is usually installed in a by-pass loop. This filtration principle operates as follows: The fuel or oil will be continually recirculated through the filter. Solid particulate and water are simultaneously removed as the equipment is in operation. Due to the benefits of this process, the oil is maintained in a clean condition on a continual basis. This results in a reduction in oil drain intervals. Hippo filter housings can be used in either a by-pass or full flow configuration. Manifold Options Available: A manifold can be connected to the base of the Hippo filtration system. The advantage of this is that it acts as a pressure reducer with a built in relief valve. This ensures a constant, steady flow through the filter and ensures optimum filtration efficiency. 5

The cartridge(s) should be changed if either of the two following conditions are met; The differential pressure across the housing (or housings if arranged in parallel) increases by 1 bar over the base operating value. The cartridge has been in service for 200 hours. Where the unit is used continuously on very dirty oil or oil contaminated with water, the cartridge may require changing more frequently Cartridge Change Procedure 1. If possible remove the suction hose from the liquid reservoir and run the system for a while to purge the oil out of the filter housings. 2. Ensure the pump is turned off and there is no pressure retained in the system. 3. Slowly undo the four securing bolts in a diagonal pattern and remove the lid. Be prepared for possible oil spray and wear eye protection. 4. Remove the cartridge using a twisting and pulling motion. 5. Check alignment of perforated base disc if used. 6. Change the cartridge ensuring it is firmly pushed on to the central mounting lug. 7. Inspect the lid seal and replace if necessary. 8. Replace the lid and firmly tighten the four bolts, by hand, in a diagonal pattern, torque to 15Nm 9. Run and check for leaks. 10. Run for 10mins and confirm lid bolts are secure. 6
