Munich July 6, 2007 netinforum 2007 International Standardization and Best-Practice Examples, Director Climate Neutral, 3C Consulting GmbH
Company Background 3C The Carbon Credit Company 3C was founded in autumn in Frankfurt am Main / Germany - as independent spin-off from Dresdner Bank Allianz Group 3C currently employs 45 specialists - based in Frankfurt, Berlin, Santiago de Chile and Washington, D.C. - Offices in London, Beijing, New Delhi and Moscow to be set up in 2007/2008 Since 2006, 3C is structured as a holding organization and backed by a strategic investor 2
Business Areas 3C operates in four core business areas Carbon Investment Advisory Origination of of CDM/JI/VER Projects Trading Strategies & Trading Desk Desk Climate Neutral Products & Services 3
Business Areas Climate Neutral Products and Services Services Development of concepts for climate neutral products, services and events: Linking climate protection with environmental and social corporate responsibility Development of tailor-made climate neutral activities Portfolio management for corporate clients Support in the communication of climate neutral activities Co-project development in cooperation with offset clients 4
Business Areas Climate Neutral Products and Services Market Position Current pipeline of more than 2 Mio tons of high quality GHG emission reduction certificates (CERs, early CDM vintages, Carbon Social Methodology, Gold Standards CERs, Gold Standard VERs, VER+, CCBA) Around 30 employees working in project origination, project risk assessment and related climate neutral services Growth above market average Other service carbon offset providers are not comparable to 3C since - 3C carries in-depth risk management expertise (independent spin-off from Allianz) and project financing knowledge (urgently needed for this business) - 3C is focused on b-to-b business and not on b-to-c business - 3C so far had no negative media coverage (see e.g. The carbon neutral myth etc.) Close cooperation with TUEV SUED and other DOEs 3C as expert for "Code of Best Practice for the provision of carbon offsetting (DEFRA) 3C in close cooperation with The Climate Group s Carbon Stewardship Council to set up an international standard for carbon offsetting Many blue chip clients (HSBC, UBS, Credit Suisse, DHL, FIFA, Deutsche Telekom, Toyota, Luftfartsverket, Allianz etc.) 5

Offset Standards Overview Standard Reg/Vol Project types +/- CDM Regulated Industrial gases, renewables, energy efficiency, A&R + Government backed, rigorous process - Price, transaction costs, mainly large scale projets JI Regulated Industrial gases, renewables, energy efficiency + Government backed - Mainly industrial, not before 08 Gold Standard Reg. + Vol. Renewables, demand side energy efficiency + Premium quality, scoial benefits - Availability, small scale projects, delivery risk VCS Voluntary Industrial gases, renewables, energy efficiency, A&R + Consultation process, registry - Additionality (?), validation, delay VER+ Voluntary All approved CDM meths. + Easy, following CDM - Reach? CCBA Voluntary Forestry and land use + Consultation process, quality - Project standard EUA s Voluntary n/a + Government backed - Additionality (phase I), no projects Social Carbon Meth. Voluntary Renewables, energy efficiency, A&R + Premium quality, social benefits - Reach? 9
Emission Reduction Projects High Quality Standards for Emission Reduction Projects Additionality: Only offset projects are suitable for carbon offsetting that would not have been realized without the carbon finance provided Environmental integrity through third party verification: 3C requires monitoring/verification of our offset projects by an independent 3rd party (DOEs) Offset project types: 3C is especially engaged in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects Double counting: 3C ensures that the intended GHG reduction effect of its climate neutral activities is not affected by double counting In close cooperation with TUEV SUED, 3C applies the VER+ Quality Standard for emission reduction credits as 3C s minimum quality standard. We also have Gold Standard CERs and VERs, CCBA credits and Social Carbon Methodology credits in our portfolio. 10
Emission Reduction Projects Quality and transparency through renowned partners Öko-Institut - Training for emission calculation - Partner of the climate neutral FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 TUEV SUED - Technical partner of the 3C Climate-Partner Project - Verification of complex emission calculations - Jointly development of the VER+ Quality Standard Gold Standard and Climate, Community & Biodiversity Alliance - Close cooperation in identifying and developing of Gold Standards Projects - 3C as sponsor of the Gold Standard KPMG and Accredited Accountant - retirement of VERs via independent partners - independent verification of 3C s processes 11
Emission Calculation 3C s High Quality Standards for Calculation of Carbon Footprints Principles of completeness and conservativeness - Company footprints are calculated according to the GHG Protocol - 3C calculations of GHG emissions follow the principles of completeness and conservativeness, including all relevant sources of GHG and uncertainty factors, choosing conservative emission factors and assumptions Scientifically sound and up-to date emission factors - 3C maintains a database of country specific emission factors that is continuously updated in line with scientific progress Consistent system boundaries - For calculations that encompass different sources of GHG, 3C strives to achieve consistency of calculation boundaries (e.g. CO2 vs. CO2e) 12
Emission Calculation High Quality Standards for Calculation of Carbon Footprints Treatment of calculation uncertainties - Uncertainties of a calculation are considered through application of an adequate safety factor in accordance with the customer. Quality control - Calculations delivered to our customers have undergone a careful process of quality control. The quality of 3C calculations is supervised by TUV SUD, the renowned validation company accredited under the Kyoto Protocol 13
Communication Defined standards for climate neutral activities are key for credible and transparent climate neutral communication activities: The high quality of our services is guaranteed by our - Climate Neutral Label - Climate Neutral Protocol 14
Climate neutral - Quality Standards High quality and transparency is key! especially with regard to: Emission Calculation (e.g. WRI/WBCSD GHG Protocol, ISO 14064) Choice of Emission Reduction Projects (VER+ Standard, Gold Standard etc.) Purchase and Retirement Process of Emission Reduction Certificates (Registry) 15
Emission Reduction Projects Portfolio JI Gold Standard Project: Windpark Te Apiti, New Zealand 55 wind turbines with 1.65 MW capacity each generated electricity satisfies the power requirement of households Te Apiti is one of the first projects validated according the WWF Gold Standard project developer: Meridian Energy, NZ verification by DNV total t CO2e over seven years 16
