COORETEC: The German R&D-Initiative for Clean Coal Technologies 4 th International Conference on Clean Coal Technologies and 3 rd International Freiberg Conference on IGCC & XTL Technologies Dresden, 18 May 2009 Dr. Arne Höll Assistant Head of Division Energy Research

Outline energy research in Germany: looking back current situation of energy research: the Governments 5 th Energy Research Programme role of fossil energy carriers in Germany COORETEC: the clean coal R&D-initiative summary

Orientation of Energy Policy First German Energy Programme Energy policy must be oriented toward the long-term. Nevertheless, at the same time it must remain flexible in the medium-term in order to be able to adapt in case of fundamental changes in the situation. Therefore the energy policy cannot be a single, unique statement. On the contrary, it will be a continuous politicoeconomic task to update the programme and adapt it to changing situations." Bonn, 26 September 1973

German Energy Research Programme

German R&D-Efforts in Energy Research Government s strategic outline of energy research in Germany: 5 th Energy Research Programme Innovation and New Energy Technologies duration: , extended to 2010 budget: about 2.85 billion goal: provide a reliable, economic and environmentally compatible energy supply wide range of energy technologies: energy efficiency in the end use sector renewable energies clean coal technologies and CCS fuel cells and hydrogen energy-optimized construction

Importance of Fossil Energy Carriers in Germany German Gross Electricity Production in TWh Other Waste PV Biomass Water Wind Nuclear Gas Oil Lignite Hard Coal BMWi - IIIA Nearly 60 % of the gross electricity production in Germany is based on fossil energy carriers today.

The German R&D Initiative COORETEC BMWi Initiative COORETEC : CO 2 Reduction Technologies R&D of low-co 2 -emission power plant technologies collaborative research between science and industry reduce risks and follow market-oriented developments focus on two strategic developments: Improvement of Efficiency CO 2 -Capture Natural Gas Coal Natural Gas Coal Combustion Coal Gasification Natural Gas Combined Cycle (NGCC) Steam Power Plant (SPP) IGCC NGCC with Post-Combustion Capture SPP with Post-Combustion Capture Oxyfuel Chemical Looping Combustion IGCC with Pre-Combustion Capture Chemical Looping Gasification
