General information These Product Category Rules apply to products that provide a function as cooker hood (also known as extractor hood, kitchen hood, stove hood, or exhaust hood). A cooker hood is used to vent excess moisture from the kitchen, as well as objectionable food odours, smoke from burned foods, and combustion products from gas stoves. Often, the cooker hood also features stove lighting to illuminate the stovetop. This document specifies the requirements for the LCA study and for the format and content of the EPD itself. Recognising the global aspects of the industry the geographical coverage is global. The PCR document has been prepared in accordance with ISO by ELICA S.p.A 1, FEBE ECOLOGIC 2 and MECCANO 3 within the framework of the LAIPP project ( financed by the EU LIFE Environment Program. 2. Description of company and of the product General information about the company can be included i.e. the existence of quality systems or environmental management system according to ISO or EMAS, or any other environmental management system in place. Relevant information such as specific manufacturing processes beneficial from the environmental point of view can be described

3 Mandatory information that has to be included about the product: Reference standard product identification (category, typology, family, - trademark, commercial code etc.) product dimension (width, height, depth) - insulation class IEC aspiration mode IEC total power supply IEC light type - number of speeds - carbon filter efficiency IEC grease filter efficiency IEC airflow [m 3 /h] IEC max. pressure IEC noise [dba] IEC motor absorption IEC luminance IEC List of materials and chemical substances The material declaration shall be given and shall include the total weight of the product and the amount of the different materials included. In the Member States of the European Union, the product has to be in compliance with the RoHS Directive (Restriction of Hazardous Substances, 2002/95/EC). In countries outside of the European Union, all materials/substances of the product that are submitted to legal requirements and customer demands have to be listed and quantified. If there are no existing legal requirements, information on the presence of substances in the product has to be included for the following substances: lead, mercury, cadmium, chromium VI, PBB (Polybrominated biphenyls) and PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ether). 4. Functional unit The functional unit is one cooker hood product with characteristics and performances described in Chapter 2. Predicted life time of the product shall be indicated based on market experience and/or statistics. 5. System boundaries According to Figure 1 the life cycle of the cooker hood includes manufacturing, use and end of life phases. Distribution of the final product to consumer is not included.

Figure 1 Flow chart of system boundaries The following unit processes and/or information shall be included within the main life cycle phases: Manufacturing Phase raw materials Pre-manufacture of main parts, including packaging (steel, plastic, electric parts etc.) Transport of raw materials and/or main parts to the manufacturer of the product Manufacture of the product, assembly Use Phase The time of use assumed of the product shall be clearly indicated based on market experience and/or statistics. Electricity consumption during use shall be calculated and declared according to the average motor and light absorption 4. The applied mix of electricity shall be documented. Maintenance can be considered according to the instructions of the product data sheet, manual and/or statistics. End of life Processes of waste management (collection, recycling, disposal etc.) can be included in the system boundaries only if specific information are available and the defined scenario is realistic. Data about the considered scenario must be welldocumented. If the waste management scenario is not based on specific information then it cannot be included in the system boundaries and only the amount of waste and output resources that are generated shall be specified. Other general information or recommendation can be included in the Chapter 11. "Recycling declaration". The time period for which the LCA results are valid has to be defined. 4 average motor power absorption is calculated as the arithmetic mean of motor absorption at the different speed levels

5 The boundaries towards nature shall describe the flow of material and energy resources from nature into the system and emissions from the system to air and water and waste out of the system. Building of site, infrastructure, production of manufacturing equipment and personnel activities shall not be included. The boundaries towards other technical systems describe the inflow of material and components from other systems and the outflow of material to other systems. For the manufacturing phase the outflow of waste materials for recycling, heat recovery, landfill and waste treatment shall be declared without assigning the environmental impact of the system. 6. Cut-off rules Processes/activities that altogether do not contribute to more than 1% of the total environmental impact for any impact category are allowed to be omitted from the inventory analysis. Components and materials that altogether do not contribute to more than 1% of the total mass of the product may be excluded. This rule can be applied for product parts that have similar composition to at least one of those components that cumulatively contribute more than 99% of the total mass of the product. 7. Allocation rules Allocation among co-products of unit processes should be avoided by detailed system description. If it is not possible, allocation can be done: - When producing only one product group at the manufacturing plant the resources and the energy consumption as well as emissions and waste shall be evenly allocated by mass to products or by production volume (number of products) depending on data available and relevance for the type of process. For some processes the use of resources is primarily related to the number of units and for others it is mass related. - When essentially different products are being manufactured at the manufacturing plant, the environmental impact related to the processes should firstly be allocated to product groups and mass flow allocation secondly shall be applied within the product groups. Resources and emissions related to processes common for several product groups shall be allocated by mass of the material treated by the process. No allocation should be made for materials subject to recycling. The recycling processes are included when recycled materials are used as inputs. Outputs subject to recycling are regarded as outputs to the next life cycle. Deviation from these allocation rules must be documented and justified. 8. Units The following units shall be used: SI units. Preferred power and energy units: kw (MW) for power and kwh (MWh) for energy 5

Calculation rules and data quality requirements Specific data, defined as primary - or secondary data referred to the system that is going to be analysed or to other systems equivalent from a technological point of view - shall be used for the life cycle phases. Representative secondary data can be used from the following sources - Branch specific mean values - Another equivalent manufacturer - Process technical literature - Life cycle inventory databases The mix of electricity used can be approximated as the official one in the country if site-specific data can not be obtained. The mix of electricity shall be documented. The sum of the contribution to all parts of the life cycle to the separate impact categories from the use of generic data, instead of specific data, must not exceed 10% of the total contribution to the impact categories 10. Parameters to be declared in the EPD Parameters shall be declared according to MSR 1999:2, Appendix A: Tasks for companies and organizations. It contains parameters related to resource use, pollutant emissions and additional information: - Non-renewable resources - without energy content - with energy content - Renewable resources - without energy content - with energy content - Electricity consumption - Emission of greenhouse gases (expressed as the sum of global warming potential, GWP, 100 years). - Emission of ozone-depleting gases (expressed as the sum of ozonedepleting potential in CFC 11-equivalents, 20 years) - Emission of acidifying gases (expressed as the sum of acidifying potential in mol H + ) - Emission of gases that contribute to the creation of ground-level ozone (expressed as the sum of ozone-creating potential in kg etheneequivalents) - Emission of substances to water contributing to oxygen depletion (expressed as the sum of oxygen consumption potential in kg O 2 ) - Waste generation (classified into hazardous and other waste) Contribution of main life-cycle phases (Manufacturing, Use, End of life) into the total parameter values should be visualised in table or graphic forms.

7 11. Recycling declaration (Optional) A recycling declaration may include information on aspects that are important for the understanding and appreciation of the recycling properties of the product. The recycling declaration may also include information about the dismantling of products and reuse of materials: - Information on suitable procedures for recovery of selected parts of the entire products - Information on a suitable method for reuse of the product (or parts of the product) and the proper handling of the product as waste at the end of its life cycle. 12. Other environmental information (Optional) Information may be included on aspects how the product should be handled during use, maintenance and recycling to reduce environmental impacts. 13.
