2 REDft REDft How it works In the REDft process, microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes are integrated into the high-pressure reverse osmosis or nanofiltration modules. Coarse filtered feed water enters the suction of a High Pressure Feed Pump [see Process Summary diagram], which provides sufficient pressure to produce the required flow rate of RO or NF permeate. REDft systems may also incorporate an Energy Recovery Device (ERD) such as a turbocharger or Pelton wheel. The REDft vessel consists of Ultrafiltration (UF) or Microfiltration (MF) membranes in series with Reverse Osmosis (RO) or Nanofiltration (NF) membranes. The UF membranes remove suspended solids, particulates and microorganisms while allowing passage of ions and dissolved molecules. The UF component operates in dead-end configuration; 100% of the feed passes through the membrane. UF filtrate passes to the RO/NF membranes, which remove ions and dissolved molecules. A fraction of the feed to the RO/NF membranes, passes through the membrane and is collected as permeate, while the remaining reject is dumped to drain or routed to an ERD where the energy is utilised to pressurise the feed stream. UF membranes require periodic backwashing to remove accumulated solids from the membrane surface, however REDft eliminates the need for a dedicated UF ancillary backwashing system (which typically consists of a large tank and pumps) through a novel system of backwashing. This involves diverting water back through the UF membranes while the train remains in operation. REDft pressure vessels are grouped into pods which consist of one or more vessels. Each pod is provided with positive isolation at the feed side and when backwashing is initiated, the feed flow is cut off and filtrate is passed back through the membrane. This filtrate is produced via the remaining online pods; each pod is connected via a central port connection [see Process Summary diagram] to allow the distribution of filtrate for backwashing. The REDft train UF component produces sufficient filtrate to allow the NF permeate output to be met, while simultaneously backwashing a single pod. The pod system gives REDft the advantage of having N+1 sparing within a single train, this allows a greater degree of flexibility in the design of the system leading to a more optimised layout.

5 REDft What is REDft By combining UF or MF elements in the same pressure vessel as the NF or RO elements, with both sets of membrane elements operating at the same feed pressure, H 2 Oil & Gas has been able to reduce plant area by up to 50 percent, something that is of particular importance for offshore Oil & Gas platforms. The flexibility of REDft is unique among existing technologies and can reduce costs from start-up if optimally configured. REDft is suitable for a wide range of water treatment applications that utilise reverse osmosis or nanofiltration. REDft was originally designed for the offshore Oil & Gas Industry. A key application of REDft is the production of low sulphate water using specialised sulphate removal nanofiltration membranes. Our sulphate removal technology delivers treated, de-sulphated seawater suitable for well injection. Where oilfield reservoir formation water contains significant amounts of barium and/or strontium, the injection of untreated seawater into the reservoir may result in the formation of scaling, which can reduce reservoir permeability and may also be deposited internally on pipe surfaces. REDft represents a completely new methodology which makes optimal use of existing technology. REDft systems can be made considerably smaller and lighter than current conventional designs.
