5 Freiburg- The Green City As a result of their energy/environmental policies: Chosen as Germany s Environmental Capital in 1992 Setting low energy standard in Germany 30% below national standard for new houses CO 2 emissions from traffic decreased by 14% Currently >200 passive houses in Freiburg 10,000 people in Freiburg employed in the environmental and solar industries alone Ever-increasing standards In 2011, all houses in Freiburg are required to meet Passivhaus standards 2030 target: 40% CO 2 reduction

7 Freiburg-Vauban Vauban: A sustainable model district Now a family-friendly neighborhood for 5000 people The Vauban area relies on civic commitment, collective building, and living with ecological awareness Low-energy building is mandatory in this district Zero-energy and energy-plus building and the application of solar technology is standard The first housing community world wide in which all the homes produce a positive energy balance The solar energy surplus is sold back into the city's grid for a profit on every home
8 Freiburg- Vauban One of the largest solar districts in Europe More than 450 m 2 of solar collectors, 1200 m 2 of photovoltaics These numbers are continuously growing Vegetation-covered flat roofs store rainwater, which is collected and re-used
9 Freiburg- Vauban Transportation ideology: Priority to pedestrians, cyclists and public transport Privileges to car-free living The residential area has been linked to the city tram system, allowing people to live without a car 40% residents without cars Bike use very popular Neighborhood has little traffic Kid-friendly
10 Freiburg- Vauban Infrastructure includes schools, youth facilities, civic meeting places, a market place, and many areas for recreation and play Very community-friendly Green space was preserved as much as possible Green spaces left between housing- provide play areas for children
11 Darmstadt- Passivhaus Institute Passive House (Passivhaus) a low-energy building standard Based on concept of passive heating (basic building physics) Building heats itself, minimal additional heat supplied Utilization of well-insulated windows/windowframes very important 5 basic principles 1. High levels of thermal insulation 2. Well-insulated window frames with triple low-e glazing 3. Thermal-bridge-free construction 4. Airtight building envelope 5. Comfort ventilation with highly efficient heat recovery
12 Darmstadt- Solar Decathlon TU Darmstadt Architecture School Solar Decathlon: an international competition with 20 universities to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energyefficient solar-powered house TU Darmstadt won the competition in 2007 and 2009 Solar Decathlon team housed in the Department of Architecture s Energy Efficiency Building Unit

14 Darmstadt- Solar Decathlon 2007 Solar Decathlon house: planned as Passivhaus Objective: minimize energy needed, obtain remainder from PV Thermal shell glass window frame Plumbing cube to minimize the plumbing/ducts Outside shell functionality: Big south windows with shading and overhangs- gains energy PVs track the sun North façade only made of wood (too little sun to use thermal glass) Privacy obtained by closing shades

22 Impressions/Conclusions Germany lives up to its reputation as a leader in the field of sustainable architecture Many energy efficient buildings were also aesthetically pleasinggreat examples of form and function Impressed by the 30-year energy policy turnaround in Freiburg They made it look easy but it requires community involvement and a lot of dedication The U.S. has a lot of room to grow!
