Post Consumer Plastics Collected for Recycling in Canada (kgs) PET Bottles HDPE Bottles PP Bottles Non-bottle Rigid Film Foam CPIA 2015 Report; 2013 data

Plastics Packaging Collected in Canada for Recycling CPIA 2015 Report; 2013 data 311 million kgs collected for recycling 9% increase over 2012 Bottle recycling still dominates 23% increase in film and 172% increase in foam 80% of collected plastics is reclaimed in Canada or US

Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) of Plastics Packaging March 2014, LCA study on benefits of plastic packaging looked at materials, manufacturing, distribution, usage & disposal Examined substituting all plastic packaging with non-plastic alternatives - found significant detrimental impacts on packaging weight, transport energy consumption & global warming 4.4 more material used (by weight) 2X more energy used 2.3X more global warming potential Report & press release:

Plastics Packaging Helps to Conserve Natural Resources GLASS 36% PACKAGING PLASTIC 3.5% PACKAGING Without plastics, distributors fleets would make 50% more journeys = more cost and emissions

CPIA Projects to Increase Recycling of Plastic Packaging 2014 pilot for ICI collection and recycling of film Partnership with Walmart & SC Johnson on return-to-retail film collection Ongoing partnership to manage PS foam at Montreal depot Support of other provincial and municipal programs to manage PS

Expanding Film Plastics Recycling to ICI Sector Project launched in April 2014 Collecting/recycling stretch wrap from loading docks and back-ofstore film, and educating retail tenants Material collected in first 4 months showed high levels of non-pe contamination Recycling partnership changed in August 2014; fine-tuned in Q4 Case study and reporting in Q2 2015

Expanding Film Plastics Recycling to Retail Partnership with Walmart & SC Johnson announced in July 2014 National return-to-retail model to collect a wide range of post-consumer film and bag materials Campaign includes in-store marketing branded bins, e-signage, in-aisle shelf-talkers Upcoming national PR campaign CPIA providing funding for in-store support and conducting material audits at 6 Ontario stores work ongoing

Industry-Municipal Partnership for Polystyrene (PS) Collection & Recycling Successful year-long pilot to collect PS at LaSalle s Ecocentre in Montreal, Quebec made permanent in October 2014 All types of PS collected PS foams & rigid; food containers, cushion packaging, panels Partnership with member company to use backhaul infrastructure and include recycled PS in durable construction products Plans to introduce backhaul model to other municipalities in 2015

Expanding PS Foam Collection New Densifier Technology Municipality of Colchester British Columbia New Brunswick Nova Scotia Ontario Densifiers established in other locations both municipal and IC&I Canada Densifying PS reduces recycling and shipping costs substantially systems expanding across Canada19

The 4R s Benefits Plastics Sustainability Integrated Solid Waste Resource Management Systems utilizing 4R s enhance opportunities for resource conservation, recycling & recovery Benefits to economy, environment & socially Plastics recycling & recovery increases from enhanced 4R s systems Image Source: Durham Works Spring/Summer 2015

Summary: Plastics are Too Valuable to Waste 1. Plastics make a positive contribution to the three pillars of sustainability and zero waste to landfill goals 2. Plastic packaging has high value in recycling & energy recovery 3. Communication and education needed to inform the public on the efficient use of plastics 4. Partnership models create unique outreach, collection, recycling & resource recovery opportunities 5. Integrated Solid Waste Resource Management Systems utilizing all 4R s enhance opportunities for plastic resource conservation, recycling & recovery
