Elements of Successful Utility Management Policy The Public Policy Committee of the GM Board of Directors, which is wholly comprised of independent directors, periodically reviews GM s strategies and plans in the areas of advanced technology, fuel economy, and environmental performance, including global climate issues. It fosters GM's commitment to operate its business worldwide in a manner consistent with the rapidly changing demands of society and provides public policy guidance to management to support GM's progress in growing the business globally within the framework of GM's core values and Environmental Principles to ensure that GM is strongly positioned to compete today and into the future. GM also has an Energy, Environmental & Safety Strategy Board that oversees all strategic and tactical environment, energy and safety issues and initiatives concerning GM s business, globally Energy Management is integrated into GM s Global Manufacturing System as one of the elements along with Safety, Cost, Quality Energy per unit production is on the scorecard for each manufacturing facility, which is managed through Plan-Do-Check-Act methodology. GM has a Commitment and Accountability Partnership process in place that assesses progress against assignment goals. Goals in the area of energy and CO2 reduction targets are measured via scorecards at the local management level as well as regionally and globally. The scorecards are reviewed monthly, and are used as a project management tool, professional performance plan for development, and recognition tool. Performance that does not meet the target requires a countermeasure that is monitored for continuous improvement. GM Energy, Carbon, Water Al Hildreth 16-May-2012

GM is Transforming its Facilities Our facilities are demonstrating environmental stewardship through 6. Continuous Improvement Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy Use Resource Conservation Waste Reduction Did You Know? Over half of GM s manufacturing facilities are landfill free. Environment & Energy Sustainability
Driving Energy Efficiency 26% 28% Less carbon emissions between 2005 and 2010* Less energy use globally between 2005 and 2010* Did You Know? GM s global energy conservation efforts for the last 5 years have saved enough electricity to power 1.3 MILLION homes. $40 Million USD toward clean projects to reduce 8 million metric tons of CO2 *On a per vehicle produced basis Environment & Energy Sustainability
Powering Plants from Renewable Sources We re one of the leading users of renewable energy in the manufacturing sector. In the U.S. alone, 1.4% of our U.S. energy consumption comes from renewable resources.
Solar Power We house nearly 30 megawatts of solar power at seven facilities, with plans to double output to 60 megawatts by We are the home of: California s first solar array The world s largest industrial rooftop installation in Zaragoza, Spain The largest photovoltaic solar array in Southeast Michigan at Detroit Hamtramck Assembly. Seven facilities have solar charging canopies on their grounds.
Turning Trash into Energy We re the second largest industrial user of landfill gas in the United States. Four of our manufacturing facilities use it as an energy source, generating $5 million in savings in At Orion Assembly, landfill gas saves GM $1.1 million a year in energy costs, while cutting greenhouse gases, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides.
Green Building and Renovations LEED gold certified buildings: Lansing Delta Township Assembly and GM's Shanghai campus. We hope to achieve LEED certification at our new Joinville, Brazil engine plant and our Warren, Mich. data center that s being designed for optimal energy efficiency.
