Building Careers in Sustainable Facilities Design and Management Architectural and Engineering Managers The Green Economy Engineering Managers could play an important role in the emerging green economy. Some may already work in green sectors, such as in environmental protection where they are involved in activities related to environmental remediation, climate change adaptation, and ensuring or enhancing air quality. Others may work in the research, design, and consulting services sector where they perform "indirect jobs" related to the green economy involving activities such as energy consulting or research and other related business services. 45 Building Careers in Sustainable Facilities Design and Management Architects, Except Landscape and Naval The Green Economy Architects play an important role in the emerging green economy by creating designs that are friendly to the environment and follow smart growth and sustainable design principles. In general, this type of architecture tries to reduce the negative impact of structures on the environment by improving the efficient use of materials, energy, and building space. 46 Building Careers in Sustainable Facilities Design and Management The Green Economy Construction Managers Construction Managers can play an important role in the emerging green economy. The primary difference between the work of green Construction Managers and the duties of their conventional counterparts lies in their ability to implement environmentally friendly materials and technologies. This creates a more ecofriendly construction project. Source: California EDD Labor Market Information Division
Building Careers in Sustainable Facilities Design and Management The Green Economy Civil Engineers Civil Engineers will play an important role in the emerging green economy. Some will assist with the research and design of sustainable materials used for construction or energy-efficient structures. They will work within the renewable energy generation sector, developing and designing projects that use renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass. In addition, Civil Engineers will work in the green construction sector, using green technologies to design new structures or retrofit existing ones. They will work in the transportation sector, developing and designing new ways to reduce the environmental impacts of various transportation projects. Engineers are also involved in environmental protection, such as remediation, air quality, and climate change adaptation. Source: California EDD Labor Market Information Division
Building Careers in Sustainable Facilities Design and Management The Green Economy Civil Engineers Green economy activities and technologies would most likely have an effect on Civil Engineers. The advancements in technology may cause changes to the work and worker requirements, such as new tasks, skills, knowledge, and credentials. Source: California EDD Labor Market Information Division
Building Careers in Sustainable Facilities Design and Management The Green Economy Mechanical Engineers Mechanical Engineers will play an important role in the emerging green economy. Some will assist with the research and design of renewable energy components or energy-efficient systems. Others will work on green construction technology or transportation-related solutions to reduce environmental impacts. Source: California EDD Labor Market Information Division
Building Careers in Sustainable Facilities Design and Management The Green Economy Electrical Engineers Electrical Engineers will play an important role in the emerging green economy. They may assist with the research and design of energy-efficient systems, such as smart grids. They may also work within the renewable energy generation sector developing, designing, and testing products using energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass. Some Engineers may work with traditional non-renewable sources (oil, coal, gas, and nuclear) that are undergoing green technological changes. In addition, Electrical Engineers may work in the green construction sector, installing green technology into new green buildings or retrofitting existing residential and commercial buildings.
