Introduction Keith MacPherson Field Operations Director Sports Labs Ltd Responsible for field testing activities within Sports Labs National and Internationally. Began work with Sports Labs in 2007 as a Field testing technician.
Testing 2017 It s a whole new Ball Game
2016/17: What's Changing Late 2015 and Mid 2016, FIFA and World Rugby, updated specifications, increasing the amount of testing and parameters examined. Specifications Begin in full from 1 st January 2017 Early 2017: Updated FIH specification. Early 2017: FIFA are expected to release guidelines for base construction, including Prima LWD requirements on sub-bases.
FIFA Quality Program 2017.
FIFA Quality Program Launched in October 2015 At present fields and products can be tested to the 2012 or 2015 versions If the product has a 2015 Lab report the field must be tested to 2015 manual. If not the previous manual is still valid. Surfaces no longer automatically drop from FIFA 2 star (Quality Pro) to FIFA 1 star (Quality) a retest is required. Re-test will always be tested to the manual the field was first certified too. by January 1 st 2017 all fields must be tested to the 2015 Manual using 2015 Manual Lab products.
FIFA Quality Program Changes in the 2015 manual: Branding FIFA 1+2 Star replaced with FIFA Quality and Quality pro
Laboratory testing FIFA Quality Program 2017.
FIFA Quality Program Additional Lab testing: Extended wear testing - Lisport XL Ball Roll after sample wear All Yarn colours used to have individual test reports for UV exposure UV Stabilizer reports - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) Longer exposure to UV tests Heat Rating Splash Rating Increased control on product ID Tighter tolerances on Lab parameters.
FIFA Quality Program Lisport XL: Replaces the previous Lisport wear apparatus. Designed to replicate on field wear patterns in the Lab. Decreased cycles, increased wear. FIFA QUALITY: Lisport cycles Lisport XL 6020 cycles FIFA QUALITY PRO: Lisport 5200 cycles Lisport XL 3020 cycles
FIFA Quality Program Lisport XL: Carry out Ball Roll testing (Reduced) on worn samples along with other standard performance tests Every individual line product installed in a system must also be full lab tested including Lisport XL. Previous requirements needed 1 Lisport sample 0.5 x 0.8m of green only 2015 Manual requires 1 sample tested for every colour used. 5.0 x 1.0m Lines can be split 5.0 x 0.5m
FIFA Quality Program Heat classification: Designed in-house by Sports Labs R&D to address the issue of excessive heat emittance on artificial turf surfaces. Samples placed on specified stone sub-base. Measurements taken over 3 phases at varying intervals Classification determined at end of 180 min Test cycle
FIFA Quality Program UV testing Exposure to UV has increased from 3000 hours ( 4 Months) to 5000 hours (7 Months) All yarn colours require to be tested. Smallest dtex only has to be tested UV stabilizer reports - Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) required for each batch of yarn produced. UV stabilizer reports must be produced for all fields tested. This document essentially acts as a pitch passport.
FIFA Quality Program Splash Designed in-house by Sports Labs R&D to address the issue of excessive infill splash on artificial turf surfaces. Identified by FIFA as an issue on televised matches Tested in 12 location's/ 2 directions Classified in a percentage at present.
FIFA Quality Program Tighter tolerances on Lab parameters
FIFA Quality Program Tighter tolerances on Lab parameters
FIFA Quality Program Yarn profiles FIFA now require additional product Identification tests on the carpets, yarns and infill. Profiles of all yarns are required to be uploaded to the lab reports and then cross referenced on field tests. Cross sectional area, width and thickness are all measured.
Field testing FIFA Quality Program 2017.
FIFA Quality Program Important dates New specification for Field testing begins 1 st January Only fields with products installed and tested to the 2015 manual can be certified. The only exception to this will be if a project has been tendered before 1 st July The manufacture of the turf will have to go through a process with FIFA to provide evidence to this effect.
FIFA Quality Program DIMENSIONS FIFA QUALITY: 90m - 120m in length 45m - 90m in width FIFA QUALITY PRO: 100m 110m in length 64m - 75m in width In some cases exceptions will be made, for pro clubs or if Member associations (SFA) request.
FIFA Quality Program Line markings All installed yarn must be the same product and must have a lab report. Check line markings match the main product before instillation. If you have a none standard yarn colour (Purple, Black etc) Check these are listed in the lab report
FIFA Quality Program Testing No change to the number of test locations. 19/6 locations Consistency of results introduced.
FIFA Quality Program Testing Additional recorded info: Pile height and Free Pile Infill Depths Depth probe Free Pile Height turf Prism. Indicates if the field has sufficient Free Pile and whether the pile is upright or laying flat.
FIFA Quality Program 2017 Ball Roll The only limit to change in the 2017 manual is the re-test requirements for ball roll for Quality Pro surfaces. These have reduced from 4 10m to 4 8m. This limit is now the same through out the life of the product. The new lab testing procedures are designed to increase quality of Quality Pro carpets.
FIFA Quality Program 2017 Visual assessments: 1. Open joints (greater than 3mm), no looped piles 2. Uneven infill - should not exceed ±10mm. (FIFA 21) 3. Exposed irrigation sprinklers on the playing surface. 4. Exposed goal post sockets. 5. Perimeter hazards within 3 metres of the field of play.
FIFA Quality Program 2017 Visual assessments:
FIFA Quality Program 2017 Run off s Optional testing in Run off s Member associations may request this at discretion. Most likely at pro clubs The same limits apply to run off s as to the main field
World Rugby 2017
World Rugby 2017 International Rugby Board, rebranded to World Rugby in 2015 A new manual was launched in May 2015 with a revision in June 2016 All fields must now be tested to the new manual, with respect to test locations and procedures. If the field is a re-test then the new locations and procedures still apply, however the original limits can be applied. World Rugby now allow certification of any size of field.
World Rugby 2017 Similar Lab changes to Lab testing as to that of FIFA Introduction of Lisport XL, replacing current Lisport. additional test locations in Run offs, the entire carpet area is now assessed. New online reporting and certification system, know as Hermes
Laboratory testing World Rugby Regulation
World Rugby 2017 Additional Lab testing: Similar to FIFA requirements and changes Extended wear testing - Lisport XL All Yarn colours used to have individual test reports for Longer exposure to UV tests Heat Rating Splash Rating Increased control on product ID Tighter tolerances on Lab parameters.
World Rugby 2017 Tighter tolerances on Lab parameters
Field testing World Rugby 2017.
World Rugby 2017 DIMENSIONS International: 94m - 100m 68m - 70m 6m 22m 5m Length between Goal line Width In Goal (10m preferred) run offs recommended If Run offs are below 5m a risk assessment is required. Smaller sized fields: World Rugby will now accept any size of field to be certified. Restrictions are made on pitch size for competitive matches governed by World Rugby.
World Rugby 2017 Increased Test Locations
World Rugby 2017 Performance testing and visual inspections
World Rugby 2017 Impact Attenuation (HIC) The 2015 Manual seen HIC increase from 1.3m Initial and 1.0m retests to 1.4m Initial and 1.3m retests. The revised 2016 Manual has dropped the initial requirement to 1.3m while retests remain at 1.3m. The increase in HIC value was designed to prevent World Rugby systems without Shockpads being able to pass HIC retest requirements and therefore become certified. Shockpads, as studies have shown increase the useful life of a system and although a larger initial outlay they recover costs with prolonged performance.
World Rugby 2017 Performance testing: What Specification? Important Dates: 2016
World Rugby 2017 World Rugby V FIFA The new specification for both World Rugby and FIFA are similar in many ways. In the main the requirements cross over making dual certification more achievable than every before. Two main requirements that remain for dual certification is the presence of a shockpad and a 60mm minimum pile height. Contact rugby can only be played on fields certified by World Rugby under Regulation 22. Both Specifications come into full effect as of 1 st January 2017
FIH 2017
FIH 2017 New FIH Quality Programme for hockey turf currently in draft expected to come into effect March 2017 New Categories for turf classification:
FIH 2017 Lab testing New classification system for products - 5 categories. Multi sport surfaces split into 3 categories with pile heights >30mm allowed Cat 3. Additional irrigation requirements Testing parameters at intervals post irrigation Enhanced Durability: Class Lisport cycles Class 5 - Lisport cycles
FIH 2017 Lab testing Enhanced Player surface testing - Vertical deformation Skin friction Increased UV testing In line with FIFA requirements Increased requirements for shock pads Testing at intervals to represent dynamic ageing to chart loss of performance. Toxicology and environmental requirements : Testing of surface and infills to EN 71-3
FIH 2017 Field Testing New category of field Global Elite Expansion of the Multi sports categories to include short pile and textile surfaces to encourage the development of surfaces that allow hockey and other sports such as tennis to share facilities This allows for pile heights greater than current maximum of 40mm.
FIH 2017 Field Testing Revised criteria for field gradients: All gradients will be allowed to have a maximum gradient of 1.0% Preferred gradients remain at 0.2% Longitudinal and 0.4% lateral Vertical deformation testing on site mm
Non Certified fields Not all fields are required to meet FIFA, FIH, World Rugby requirements. What other options are there? The Minimum requirements for the safety and performance of artificial turf are set by the BS EN BS EN covers a wide range of surfaces and surface types Football Hockey Tennis Athletics Dual use (Football/Hockey etc) The focus of the BS EN specification if more on player safety than performance to a high level.
Ongoing Certification When do I need to test and Why? SPECIFICATION FREQUENCY NOTES BS EN Every 2 years Minimum Safety and performance requirements FIFA Quality Pro Annually FIFA Quality Every 3 years No longer automatically certifies from Quality Pro World Rugby FIH Every 2 years Every 3 years ITF Single certification EN required every 3 years IAAF Single certification EN required every 3 years
