2 WHAT IS THE ENVIRONMENT? The environment is something you are very familiar with. It's everything that makes up our surroundings and affects our ability to live on the earth the air we breathe, the water that covers most of the earth's surface, the plants and animals around us, and much more.

3 DID YOU KNOW THAT....in recent years, scientists have been carefully examining the ways that people affect the environment? They have found that we are causing air pollution, deforestation, acid rain, and other problems that are dangerous both to the earth and to ourselves.

4 WAYS TO PROTECT THE ENVIRONMENT We all want to protect our planet, but we're mostly too busy or too lazy to put up big change that would improve our lifestyle and save the environment.

5 These are some simple habits which will make a difference. There is nothing new here but if you follow at least some of these tips, you can be proud of yourself participating in the protection of the environment.

6 REDUCE, RECYCLE, REUSE! REDUCE! Buy products that don't have a lot of packaging. RECYCLE! When people use things like aluminum cans, glass bottles, or paper, they have two choices: throw them in the trash or recycle them. Choose recycling! REUSE! People can also reuse other things, like using empty boxes to send things in the mail or empty plastic food containers for storing paperwork or tools.

7 LEAVE YOUR CAR AT HOME Every time you drive, you're adding more than 1.5 pounds of carbon dioxide or other gases to the environment with each mile. Change your driving habits and you make an immediate impact on the environment. Take short trips on foot or by bike instead, and you'll also make an immediate impact on your health.

8 DONATE! You have tons of clothes or things you want to get rid of. If they are still usable, give them to someone who needs them. You may also choose to give them to associations. Not only will you protect the environment, but you will also contribute to a good cause.

9 TURN OFF YOUR DEVICES When you do not use a house device, turn it off. For example, if you don't watch TV, turn it off. Turn off the light when you leave a room. It's an easy habit to take up which will help you save a lot of money.

10 MAKE THE WORLD A GREENER PLACE Plant a tree (or a few!) in your yard as a family project. Having trees around reduces your airconditioning costs by providing shade; possibly raises the property value, pulling carbon dioxide out of the environment and creating oxygen; improves water quality; and provides you with calming surroundings.

11 A GREENER WAY TO CLEAN YOUR CLOTHES Many dry cleaners use a lot of chemicals, which are dangerous for people. After your clothes are dry-cleaned, some of the chemical remains in the fabric you wear it next to your skin and it escapes into your home's environment, which is bad for you and the earth. Try investigating cleaners in your area that offer "wet cleaning" technologies that use waterbased equipment to clean your clothes.

12 GROW YOUR OWN FOOD Planting and maintaining an organic vegetable garden in your yard provides many benefits. You can enjoy a variety of veggies that are fresher and taste better than anything you'll find in the supermarket. You'll be sustaining yourself with food that didn't require fossil fuels for transportation.

13 USE COMPACT FLUORESCENT LIGHT BULBS It is true that these bulbs are more expensive, but they last much longer and they can save energy and in the long term your electricity bill would be reduced.

14 BE AN ENVIRONMENTAL VOLUNTEER Picking up litter makes a better, more beautiful environment for everyone, and gives people a reason to be proud of their community. Join organizations that try to make the world a better and cleaner place. Do something for your community and convince the others to do the same!
