2 CASE STUDY 2 TITLE Biowaste4SP Turning biowaste into sustainable products in developing countries OBJECT Biowaste4SP concerns biowaste conversion technologies into sustainable bioproducts to be implemented in developing countries. The main objective of Biowaste4SP was to develop and check feasibility-sustainability of systemsprocesses to convert agricultural and industrial biowaste into energy vectors, fertilizers and other added-value products in African and Mediterranean countries. REASON WHY YOU CHOSE IT/ YOU CONSIDERED IT RELEVANT FOR ENEPLAN Biowaste4SP explored the development of environmentally and socio-economically sustainable biotechnological processes for converting biodegradable fractions of identified African and Mediterranean agricultural and industrial waste as well as fractions of municipal and animal solid waste into biogas, food, feed, value-added products for nutraceuticals and healthcare, and organic based fertilizer.
3 Title: Biowaste4SP Funding program: EC FP7/ Timeframe: 10/ /2015. Objective: develop and check feasibility-sustainability of systems-processes to convert agricultural and industrial waste in African countries into biofuels (bioethanol and biogas) and biomaterials (fertilizers and feed). Website:

5 CASE STUDY 1 TITLE REGES Project: evaluation and ISO validation of the greenhouse gas emission reduction in the Province of Siena OBJECT Validated ISO time series analysis of GHG emission-absorption (elaborated according to the 2006 IPCC Guidelines for National Greenhouse Gas Inventories ) in the area of the Province of Siena to address environmental strategies for GHG emission reduction. REASON WHY YOU CHOSE IT/ YOU CONSIDERED IT RELEVANT ENEPLAN The REGES project concerns the cooperation of a knowledge institution (University of Siena), administrative body (Province of Siena), and control authority (RINA SpA) for the implementation of a GHG emission reduction plan in the Province of Siena. A GHG inventory has been elaborated in time series (years ) based on the 2006 IPCC methodology and the ISO standard. Results demonstrate that the performed environment management policies allowed for a significant reduction of GHG emission over time (net emissions: 449 Gg CO2-eq in 2006, -27 Gg CO2-eq in 2011). These policies include actions for RES development (mainly PV and geothermal), forest area preservation, energy saving/efficiency of buildings/machineries and waste management (including a waste-to-energy plant).
