About HVS Sustainability Services Ecotel globes change Definition of sustainability Offices Leadership 7
About ECOTEL ECOTEL was developed by HVS in association with the Rocky Mountain Institute, USA with the help of engineering and hospitality experts. It has now been revised to include the SF Green Business Program s guide for hotels and restaurants, the most vigorous standard for the hospitality industry in the United States, and is pending the United Nations GSTC ratification. It is an environmental certification that enables hotels to enhance their profits by being truly green, socially responsible, and sustainable over the long term by involving the entire value chain of owners, architects, operators, employees, suppliers and hotel guests. Three tiers of certification based on overall reduction in consumption 40-50% 50-60% 60-95% 8
About Ecotel HVS Sustainability Services calculates environmental and fiscal savings by employing: Onsite visits, Staff interviews, Auditor observations, and Hospitality industry experience-based simulations. These measures are both engineering and technology based, as well as behavioral. This report calculates primary fiscal and environmental impacts such as financial savings on utility bills and direct environmental impacts such as emissions. HVS environmental and financial computations do not calculate secondary savings such as carbon credits, embodied energy, or secondary health/ respiratory impact of emissions or indoor air quality. 9
Demand for Green Hospitality The traveling public clearly expects the hotel industry to pay attention to environmental concerns, and to operate sustainably 87% 38% 66% of travelers more likely to stay at green properties of hotel guests have researched green lodging facilities of hotel guests stated that they were aware of their hotel s conservation efforts. Source: Travel Industry Association, Deloitte, J.D. Power 2009 North America Hotel Guest Satisfaction Study; Accor Study on Guest Green Opinions, India 10
Potential to Enhance Image Green properties demonstrate a commitment to hotel guests Green properties are most cost effective than conventional properties Green properties get free publicity They are viewed as industry leaders Green certification lends prestige Green properties are particularly attractive to international clientele Green properties set you apart from your competition in being adhering to an international standard 11
Visual Cues for a Green Hotel Top seven cues that a hotel is green: Green Certification Fern Jaipur Potential Almost Linen Policy Towel Policy Shampoo Amenities Energy Efficient Light Bulbs Partial Recycling Policy Controlled Lighting We compare the current status of Fern Jaipur on these vital visual cues 12
FERN Jaipur Environmental Commitment Audit Recommendations Communications Clear vision of Sustainability Purchase Improved Quality of pertinent guest communications so that guests can make an informed choice For an effective paper recycling policy, further purchases of notebooks should not be done Reduce plastic in stores Vendor education to green supply chain Arrangements for effective disposal of cardboard and cartons Achievements 1. The hotel worked immediately upon changing the vision statement along with its team and ECOTEL members. 2. The vision statement has been clearly communicated to all staff members and is printed in all important documents of the hotel. 1. Save my stickers are clearly visible on the toilet flushes and for towel reuse while previously only the save my planet card was available for linen reuse. 2. Sheet on environment Friendly Activities available in the rooms Through paper recycling the hotel is making notepads that can be used by hotel staff Daals are now stored in cloth bags Is being followed by hotel Is being followed by hotel 13
Training and Community Involvement Training Community Involvement HR Silo Approach among Staff members Information flow in the direction of sustainability Clear understanding of SOPs relevant to each department were not there Activities that are measureable, and cumulative should be followed up Clear knowledge of all aspects on environmental savings in their own department and that of others among staff Most staff is clear about the rationale for sustainability, which includes both environmental and financial savings There is a clear progress on this where each person understands his role and his function in relation to practices that impact the environment Move away from silent runs to teaching in schools, an action that impacts not only this generation but the next and is the foundation stone of sustainability. Non-discriminatory policy being followed where respect to fellow employees is seen. During the training all employees of the hotel were trained which took about 4 sessions over 3 days. All employees were equally seated and served tea in the banquet hall. On the day of a function in the banquet hall, tea was served near kitchen with GM. Local staff is hired. 14
Summary Sheet Solid Waste Waste Segregate and weigh waste on a daily basis and monitor records Clearly weighing is being done and day-to-records are to understand waste generation baing maintained by Security, which has enabled an patterns understanding of the pattern in the hotel Reduce waste generated by hotel in terms of objects that are more use and throw Hotel has reduced the waste generated per room night by 26% and dry waste generated by 30% Active reduce, reuse, recycle and substitution policies being followed to achieve these figures Vermicompost was suggested Due to lack of land space the hotel is not able to do this and continues with sale to piggery. 15
Solid Waste Reduction Recycling: animal feed Recycling: PCB Trash Reduction 16
Solid Waste Diversion Diversion Remaining SW 17
Waste Generation 2010 vs % reduction in waste generated year-on-year 18
Summary Sheet Water water Monitoring of water should be done to understand consumption patterns Natural pesticides should be used Day-to-day submetering has been done that has enabled an understanding of seasonal and monthly trends. Also opportunities for reduction have been made possible by this data that has been generated. This serves as our baseline since there was no such analysis before. Hotel is following this regularly and has stopped usage of DDT, which contaminated ground water. Low-flow rate fixtures to be used Hotel has maintained fixtures at 30 o angle, which reduces flow rate and also set the three-setting button to medium flow rate. Use recycled water for landscaping STP should be made functional Reduce RO connections Hotel is actively using recyled water for all outdoor areas except the fountain as that will deteriorate the quality of the granite. That has been done This has been reduced for washing 19
