Biogas Asia Pacific 2014 Evolving Into ASEAN Biogas Market - A story by A Bionexus Status Renewable Energy Company Jesse Wong 2 4 June 2014, JW Marriot Hotel, Kuala Lumpur KONZEN CLEAN ENERGY SDN BHD
Introduction THE KONZEN GROUP Has been providing total solution for industrial water and wastewater engineering > 20 years. 3 main operating divisions: Konzen SE Asia (KL, Penang and Kuching) Konzen China (Tianjin and Shanghai) Konzen Clean Energy Sdn Bhd, KCE KCE was found in 2007 focus in high organic loading wastewater treatment such as POME - developed through a series of R&D and collaboration with the university. KCE obtained BioNexus Status in September
Introduction Konzen is committed to provide end-to-end turnkey services. We offer a wide range of professional services including: Project feasibility study, System design and build, EPC contractor, Existing biogas system upgrading and retrofitting, Biogas plant maintenance and monitoring Biogas for heat generation and power generation, Build, own and operate project. 3
Introduction Technology The technology developed by Konzen Clean Energy is in a closed anaerobic digester of Continuous Stirred Tank Reactor (CSTR) type under mesophilic condition. Key features: CSTR of Biogas-POME mixing, continuous & homogeneous vertical mixing days Hydraulic Retention Time No moving parts inside digester 4
Key features: Introduction Technology Mesophilic digestion with engineered process control system Temperature controlled inside the tank from our biogas mixing system. Desludging system to avoid solid sedimentation and minimize dead zone occurrences in the tank. Portion of sludge will be recycled back to the tank in order to maintain the ph and MLSS in the tank. 5
Mixing mechnism Introduction Technology 6
Parameter control regime: Parameters ph Temperature Nutrients and COD Inhibition/ toxicity Operation Hydraulic retention time Organic loading rate Mixing 7
Biogas recycle Introduction Technology Incoming raw effluent Pre-anaerobic system Anaerobic digester Biogas handling system Biogas utilization Sludge recycle Postanaerobic system Supernatant discharge to aerobic treatment Sludge collection pond/ sludge management Sludge 8
Biogas Project 1 Rinwood, Sarawak Malaysia KCE first biogas project: Rinwood Pelita Mukah 80TPH Palm Oil Mill, Mukah, Sarawak KCE investment; owns and operates the plant. Raw POME input of 50m 3 /hour ; COD of 50,000 ppm max. Digester efficiency of 80% COD reduction, tanks capacity total 8,000 m 3 9
Introduction Rinwood, Sarawak Malaysia 12.5m 3 of biogas With KCE anaerobicbiogas system, at every ton of FFB processed 8.125m 3 of methane FFB to POME rate: COD: 40,000 ppm 30.7kWh of electricity potential 10
Biogas Project 1 Rinwood, Malaysia Biogas utilization: Biogas upgrading, compression and transportation Supplement fuel for biomass boiler and grid-feeding 11
Biogas Project 2 Belian, Sinarmas, Indonesia Belian Estate Mill, 40TPH 80TPH mill, West Kalimantan, Indonesia. BiotechCorp courtesy visit to PT SMART (Sinarmas Group) Datuk Dr. Mohd Nazlee Kamal (CEO), visited PT Smart in Nov 2011 supporting BioNexus company on successfully exported local technology. 12
Biogas Project 2 Belian, Sinarmas, Indonesia 13
Biogas Project 2 Belian, Sinarmas, Indonesia Initial challenges: Mobilization/ journey Required 3 days to reach site via air, land and water transport. Communication Local authorities and regulations Without working permit - penjara paling lama 5 (lima) tahun dan denda paling paling banyak Rp ,00 Malaria Tools and equipment availability 14
Biogas Project 2 Belian, Sinarmas, Indonesia 15
Biogas Project 2 Belian, Sinarmas, Indonesia Project background: Phase 1 - Biogas to flaring Phase 2 Additional tank + biogas power generation (internal usage) Design parameters: Raw POME input of 22-44m 3 /hour Incoming POME at 80 deg C and COD of 100,000 ppm Digester efficiency of 90% COD reduction 2 digester tanks (Phase 1) with total volume of approx. 9,900 m 3 16
Biogas Project 2 Belian, Sinarmas, Indonesia 17
Biogas Project 2 Belian, Sinarmas, Indonesia Why Bolted tank: Materials for concrete tank need to be transported from Pontianak Steel plated are fused with glass material; suitable for operation within ph Assembled by bolts and nuts; installation take approximately 2 weeks per tank. The tank is anti- corrosion and requires only minimal maintenance. 18
Biogas Project 3 Panching, Felda, Malaysia Felda Panching Palm Oil Mill, Kuantan, Pahang. 45 TPH mill capacity Under construction. Targeting project completion by October
Construction works in progress. Biogas Project 3 Panching, Felda, Malaysia Design and build a biogas facility with 1 x 4,000 m 3 AD POME: 17m3/hr Potential biogas generation 480m3/hr 20
Observations & Conclusions System optimization 1. The key strategies to manage an anaerobic system: Detailing out the anaerobic operation system Installing a comprehensive anaerobic process management control system Administration and process monitoring in practice Optimization of the operational conditions can only be executed on a well-controlled and well-monitored anaerobic system. 2 nd International Conference on Anaerobic Digestion Anaerobic Digestion Asia April 2012, Bangkok, Thailand Title: Optimal Management of Anaerobic Digestion Systems: Instrumentation, Control Strategies and Implementation in Anaerobic Treatment 21
Programmed control system Well-trained plant operators Cost effective, accurate real time monitoring Practical plant management strategy Optimum anaerobic treatment and consistent biogas yield! 22
For monitoring, trouble shooting and preventive actions 23
Observations & Conclusions Market research 2. Based on our market research, >90% of the mills that intended to utilise biogas are having tank digester system 24
Observations & Conclusions Saving from diesel replacement 3. Base on current diesel price, a 500kw biogas power plant can provide a substantial saving from diesel replacement. 25
