Active Landscapes: Making Green spaces work for us Eli Cohen AYALA-Water & Ecology Water and WW management The current situation and trends: Growing water consumption, globally Source: UNWater Growing production of WW, globally Source: UNEP

Bigger cities = larger hotspots Urban centers act as a heat sink due to the tendency of materials such as concrete and asphalt to absorb heat. This creates microclimates that induce more energy use (A/C), increasing the use of nonrenewable energy and increasing air pollution Water systems current situation: Existing infrastructure cannot cope with the great loads In many places there is no or little water & ww infrastructure at all

Governing policy: Centralized WW systems Creating infrastructure in dense urban/industrial areas Incredibly high costs Disruption of life Not always possible to capture all sewage/wastewater The alternative is on-site solutions. What are the options? Active park Conventional Sustainable Energy, chemical

The NBS concept: Urban landscapes are generally meant for: recreation, green lungs and to increase the quality of life Highline NY Nashvill Green Street Namba Park, japan

Green spaces as buffering zones Green spaces act as Green lungs help maintain a balance, reduce energy use and air pollution But they can provide much more, They can work for us, as: Green kidneys for sewage treatment and recycling Stabilizers of Soil and river banks Storm water- buffering, treatment and infiltration Heat insulators urban and industrial zones

Green kidneys for sewage treatment and recycling In cooperation with Houseman Architects Ganey Tikva, Israel Ganey Tikva, Israel Green kidneys for sewage treatment and recycling On-site purification in Urban Environment. Tel Aviv, Israel Retirement residency, Poleg, Israel

Green kidneys for industrial sewage treatment and recycling AHAVA cosmetic plant Gas stations Landfill leachate Soil and river bank stabilization Neot Smadar, Israel Nala rehabilitation

Storm water buffering, treatment and infiltration Yarkon river Athens, Greece Thermal insulation Concepción, Chile, Enrique Browne Arquitectos, urban and industrial zones Green roof, Israel Quai Branly Museum, Paris Patrick Blanc

On-site sewage and storm-water treatment as well as very efficient heat and noise insulation On-site purification in Urban Environment. Tel Aviv, Israel Green roof: on-site purification and stormwater buffering Noise insulation, air purification. Tournesol VGM Modular Living Wall System by Biotecture Urban Air Purification

PUBLIC MALL REDEFINING PUBLIC SPACES AYALA Water & Ecology KNAFO KLIMOR ARCHITECTS Intensive green lung Ornamental feature On site sewage recycling Irrigation reduction Pedestrian Street & Wetland - View trough Walkway

France- in cooperation with Dutch WEST8: Ecological planning of the city of Nice and the Var Valley: Flood prevention Protection and restoration of aquifers Rehabilitation of local flora and fauna Improvement of air quality

The Eco-Trail: A comprehensive solution The various water harvesting, purification and buffering applications are combined to form a greenbelt and an Eco-Trail: A continuous trail from the sea to the Alps through the Plaine du Var. Eco-Trail Greenbelt Calla,Campeche, Mexico On-site solution for newly developed neighborhoods

Mining industry - Chile Dam and forest Canal for leachate collection NBS design concept: Holistic approach which harmonizes urban development with natural systems. Creating Sustainable Solutions

The reliability of the NBS gives us the peace of mind to incorporate WWT into the fabric of our life Which one would you prefer to live next to? "Nature, to be commanded, must be Thank you obeyed" Francis Bacon

Thank you "Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed Francis Bacon
