12 CO 2 -Sequestration / ECBM Advantages of CO 2 -sequestration in coal seams Adsorption Just like methane, CO 2 is adsorbed to the inner surface of the coal. This may considerably reduce the risk of long term leakages. CO 2 could replace CH 4 in the coal matrix and simultaneously enhance CBM production (CO 2 -ECBM). Capacity The amount that could theoretically be stored in coal is quite substantial, with estimated world-wide potentials of Gt CO 2. Sealing In most deposits, coal is associated with multiple layers of claystone acting as seals below and above CO 2 loaded seams. Distribution In many cases, the correspondence of industrial point sources and coal deposits as potential CO 2 sinks is very high, avoiding long transport distances Options of Post-Mine Utilization of Hard Coal Deposits Page 12
