18 18 6 (e) The following statements are opinions about the South North Water Transfer Project in China. In the next 20 years, another 300 million people will move from the countryside to the cities, creating even more demand for water. This project will transfer even more polluted water to the north. We need to use existing water more efficiently. Chinese industry uses far more water than western industry and currently nearly half of all irrigation water is lost before reaching the fields. At the moment, 10% of the water in the Yellow River is sewage. The problem is not just the amount of water but the amount of usable water. Trying to save water and using existing supplies more efficiently will not be enough to satisfy the growing demand. Without a large project, there will be long-term problems. This project is very expensive and will cause massive environmental problems. A larger number of smaller, more local projects along with water conservation are what is needed. (18)
19 19 Do you think that going ahead with the South North Water Transfer Project in China was the correct decision? Use evidence from the Section B resources to support your answer. (9 marks) Extra space END OF QUESTIONS (19)
