2 ACEA The Australian Chinese Engineers Association (ACEA) is a professional body of Australian Engineers, promoting technological and cultural exchanges between China and Australia in the fields of engineering and technology. Founded in 1995, the ACEA is a not-for-profit non-political organisation and our members are Australian-Chinese professionals from various companies and institutions. Odyssey Travel Our partner, Odyssey Travel, is a not for profit organisation specializing in educational and special interest travel. Operating since 1983, the organization is made up of member universities throughout Australia, New Zealand and Asia. Odyssey Travel is a division of the Australian & New Zealand College for Seniors Limited. Odyssey Travel is a full member of TAANZ and a fully accredited IATA Travel Agent. Australian Chinese Engineers Association Projects & Collaboration Opportunities in Sustainability & Infrastructure Study Tour - China As part of our 2012 program, the ACEA is organising a study tour focusing on China s engineering projects and technologies in reducing carbon-dioxide emissions, renewable energy and econological rehabilitation particularly in restoration of mining sites. The program has been tailored for Australian investors, engineers, technologists, manufacturers, scientists and policy makers who have interest or have developed expertise in sustainable development to see first-hand, the latest Chinese progress in pursuing sustainable living and building eco-efficient and sustainable infrastructure and to find the opportunities in building up future cooperations with the Chinese partners in minimising or mitigating climate change. We wish our program may help to promote and facilitate technological exchanges in the field for Australian technology, science, engineering and business elites. Since signing and agreeing to ratify the Kyoto protocol since 1998, China has made great efforts in reducing green house gas emissions by implementing green technologies. However, as a large emitter and a growing economy, the country still faces many challenges in climate change mitigation. According to newly released China s 12 th five-year plan, China is to further step-up the pace by improving its energy efficiency, reforming energy system and significantly enhancing the development of renewable energy systems such as wind and solar energy. 3 In the next 25 years under China s new policies the wind and solar photovoltaic capacity will be close to the rest of the world s combined current capacity. According to the white paper titled China s Policies and Actions for Addressing Climate Change, released by China s State Council on November 22, by 2015 the country aims to reduce its CO2 emissions per unit of GDP by 17 percent and energy consumption per unit of GDP by 16 percent compared to the levels in This has been regarded as the world s most ambitious plan to develop clean and renewable energy. Citing from an announcement from the National Energy Administration, the government has set a target for installed solar power generating capacity to reach 15 gig watts (GW) by 2015 and wind power capacity to hit 100 GW. These ambitions have been tested by the fact that China has accomplished its energy conservation goals listed in the earlier 11 th Five-Year Plan ( ): the aggregate energy consumption per unit of GDP dropped 19.1 percent from that of 2005, which is equivalent to a reduction of 1.46 billion tonnes of CO2 emissions. The encouraging development has offered and will continuously offer many opportunities for Australian technology, engineering, manufacturing businesses, investors, analysts and policy makers and consulting engineers to be involved and learn from their success and lessons.
