16 COGENERATION ADVANTAGES & BENEFITS Available natural gas reserves are bigger than oil reserves Natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel available CHP-plants can also be operated with gas from renewable energy or from waste sources (e.g. biogas, sewage, CBM and landfill gas) Leads to a efficient and cost effective use of energy by using also the emitted heat from the engine coolant and exhaust gas. Reduction of CO 2 emissions CH 4 emissions by coal mines, landfill sites and sewage plants are harmful to the environment and can be treated in a profitable way by gas engine power stations CHP-plants are decentralised power stations which produce electric energy and heat close to where it is used Continuous operation (> h/a), standby-operation, peak-load reliable solution Page 16 / 3/16/2009
