ADDITIONAL PRACTICE WITH WRITING CONVERSION FACTORS Note: This worksheet is for additional practice. It is not due for a grade. Note: Unless specifically told otherwise, assume that percentage-by-mass units are in grams (g). Note: Unless specifically told otherwise, assume that percentage-by-volume units are in millilters (ml). INSTRUCTIONS Show all work (units through each step) The final answer must have correct number of significant digits and the correct units. You will need your English-English and English-Metric Conversion Tables for this practice work. Information for Question 1 1) Adenine (C 5H 5N 5) is one of the substances in DNA that makes up the human genetic code. Adenine is 44.44% carbon (C), 3.72% hydrogen (H), and 51.84% nitrogen (N) by mass. 1a) In the three boxes below, write three conversion factors that can be written for each element, using the percent-by-mass information. Carbon: Hydrogen: Nitrogen: 1b) A sample of adenine contains 25.0 grams of nitrogen. Calculate the mass (in grams) of the entire sample. 1c) Calculate the mass of hydrogen (in grams) in a gram sample of adenine. 1d) If a sample of adenine contains lbs of carbon, calculate the mass (in grams) of adenine. Page 1 of 7

Information for Question 2 2) Magnesium sulfate is the primary/active ingredient in epsom salt, which has a variety of uses. Magnesium sulfate is 20.19% magnesium (Mg), 26.64% sulfur (S), and 53.16% oxygen (O) by mass. 2a) In the three boxes below, write three conversion factors that can be written for each element, using the percent-by-mass information. Magnesium: Sulfur: Oxygen: 2b) Calculate the mass (in grams) of magnesium sulfate present when a sample of magnesium (in sulfate is found to contain 5136 grams of oxygen. 2c) Calculate the mass (in grams) of magnesium present in a gram sample of magnesium sulfate. 2d) Calculate the mass of sulfur (in grams) present in a 5.00-kilogram sample of magnesium sulfate. Page 2 of 7

Information for Question 3 3) Octane (C 8H 18) is 84.12% C (carbon) and 15.88% H (hydrogen) by mass. Octane also has a density of g/ml. 3a) In the two boxes below, write three conversion factors that can be written for each element, using the percent-by-mass information. Carbon: Hydrogen: 3b) In the box below, write the conversion factor that can be derived from the density value for octane. Density: 3c) Calculate the mass (in grams) of octane present when a sample of octane contains grams of carbon. 3d) Calculate the mass (in grams) of hydrogen present in a gram sample of octane. 3e) Calculate the mass (in grams) of octane in a ml sample of octane. 3f) Challenge Problem: A sample of octane contains grams of carbon. Calculate the volume of octane in gallons. (Note: You will need three or four conversion factors to solve this problem.) Page 3 of 7

Information for Question 4 4) Diamond (C diam) has a density of 3.52 g/cm 3. 4a) Use the density value above to write the conversion factor between the diamond s mass and its volume. Density: 4b) A diamond has a volume of cm 3. Calculate its mass (in grams). 4c) A diamond has a mass of grams. Calculate its volume (in cm 3 ) Information for Question 5 5) 1 inch = 2.54 cm. 5a) Use the raw conversion factor above to derive the conversion factor between cubic inches (in 3 ) and cubic centimeters (cm 3 ). Show your work. Derived Conversion Factor between in 3 and cm 3 : 5b) Use the conversion that you derived in Question 5a to convert 500. cubic inches to cubic centimeters. 5c) Challenge Problem: Use the information in Question 4a and Question 5a to determine the mass (in pounds) of a diamond with a volume of 4.00 cubic inches. Again, this problem requires you to use more than two conversion factors. Page 4 of 7

Question 6 6a) How many yards in 1 meter? Write the conversion factor in the box below.? yd in 1 meter: 6b) Use the raw conversion factor above to derive the conversion factor between square yards (yd 2 ) and square meters (cm 2 ). Show your work. Derived Conversion Factor between yd 2 and m 2 : 6c) Convert 12.0 square yards to square meters. 6d) 1 acre = 4840 yd 2. Use this information, and your answer to Question 6b to determine the acreage (number of acres) in square meters. 6e) Napa Valley contains approximately 45,500 acres of vineyards. The average price per acre is is $300,000 per acre. Write the conversion factor for the price per acre in the box below. Price per acre: 6f) Napa Valley contains approximately 45,500 acres of vineyards. Use your answer to Question 6e to determine the net worth of the vineyards in Napa Valley. Note: $1,000,000,000 = $1B 6g) Challenge Problem: Given all of your answers above, determine the cost (in dollars) to buy 40.0 square meters of land for a vineyard. (Do not calculate tax.) Page 5 of 7

Information for Question 7: Challenge Questions 7a) A 747-jet gets 5.0 miles to the gallon. In the box below, write the conversion factor that can be derived from this information. Jet Mileage: 7b) The average tank size of a 747 jet is 48,445 gallons. Assuming a full tank, no cargo, no crew except for the pilot and copilot, and optimum conditions, calculate the maximum distance that the airplane can travel on a full tank. 7c) In August 2015, the average price in America for jet fuel was $1.39 per gallon. Write the conversion factor for the price of jet fuel in the box below. Jet Fuel Price: 7d) Given the information and your answers to the above questions, calculate the price of jet fuel necessary to fill a the tank of a 747 jet. 7e) The conversion factor for Question 7a is expressed in miles per gallon. Determine the conversion factor in units of kilometers per liter in thousands of dollars. Note: $1000 = $ 1K 7f) The distance from LAX (Los Angeles) to KOA (Hawaii) is km. Calculate the volume (in gallons) needed travel this distance. Again, assume optimum conditions, empty plane except for pilot and copilot, etc... 7g) Determine the price of the jet fuel alone, based upon your answer to Question 7f. Page 6 of 7

Information for Question 8: Challenge Questions 8) A particular adult elephant, named Lethe, weighs pounds. The combined surface area of her feet is 800. cm 2. The equation for pressure (in English measurement) is: Pressure = P = wt A weight surface area = wt A = lbs in 2 8a) Write a raw conversion factor between inches and centimeters in the box below: Answer to 8a: 8b) Use the raw conversion factor in Question 8a to derive a conversion factor between square inches and square centimeters. Show your work. 8c) Use the pressure equation to determine the pressure (in pounds per square inch) that Lethe exerts on the ground when she stands on all four feet. 8d) Use the information in Question 8c to write a conversion factor between the elephant s weight and the surface area of her feet. Answer to 8d: 8e) Assume that a woman has a mass of 55.0 kg. Determine the size of the surface area of her shoes (in square inches) that she would need to wear to exert the same pressure on her feet that an elephant does. 8f) The combined surface area of a pair of stiletto shoes is 15.0 cm 2. How much pressure (in lbs per square inch) does a 55.0 kg woman exert on the ground when standing on both feet? 8g) Calculate the pressure the woman exerts when she is wearing flats: combined surface area is 24.0 in 2.
