2 Summary/ statement from CEO Eversheds LLP aims to be the legal partner of choice for environmentally conscious and responsible organisations. We recognise that our clients look to us to ensure they comply with environmental legislation and in turn we not only look for legal compliance but also to attain best practice, and to become market leaders in the field of environmentalism. We are committed to environmental improvements, and it is through the actions of all of our employees that we aim to minimise our adverse environmental impact. To support our internal operations, we also work within the community on environmental volunteering projects. Our partnership with the BTCV enables us to provide opportunities for staff and clients to enhance local habitats. Business activities Globally, Eversheds LLP has over 3, legal and business advisers providing services to the private and public sector business and finance community. These services are accessed through 46 international offices in 28 countries. Eversheds combines local market knowledge and access with the specialisms, resources and international capability of one of the world s largest law firms. We have five main practice groups: company commercial, human resources, legal systems, litigation and dispute management and real estate. The industry sectors we advise include education, energy, financial institutions, food, healthcare, local government, retail, telecoms and transport. This Environmental Statement highlights some specific areas of achievement and reports on the progress of our UK environmental programme. This is our initial registration to EMAS. 3 Environmental policy statement At Eversheds our vision and values are at the heart of everything we do. We understand that we have a responsibility for our planet and that our operations have a local, regional and global impact. We are committed to promoting the conservation of natural resources, preventing environmental pollution and continuously improving our environmental performance. We have identified our significant aspects as energy and paper usage, travel, and waste production. We regard environmental regulations, laws and codes of practice as the minimum standard that we should aim for and actively work towards exceeding these benchmarks. Our Environmental Management System ensures that we take account of our environmental impacts and operate in an environmentally responsible way. To improve our environmental performance we set ourselves challenging targets and perform regular audits to ensure these are met. We raise awareness of this policy through guidelines, internal communications and staff training and will ensure it is regularly reviewed and updated where necessary. Environmental Management System Our Environmental Management System (EMS) was certified to ISO141:24 in January for our UK offices (Birmingham, Cambridge, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Ipswich, Leeds, London, Manchester, Newcastle and Nottingham). The firm is committed to continually improving its environmental performance, and as such the structure of the EMS is constantly under review and revised as appropriate. The key elements of our EMS are: an environmental policy a register of our environmental aspects, which highlights how our activities affect the environment. The register is reviewed on an annual basis a register of environmental legislation that is relevant to our business which is reviewed on an annual basis (available on request) regular internal and external audits to ensure the system is maintained and areas for improvement are identified and actioned regular environmental management meetings which review and revise current performance, objectives and targets. Bryan Hughes Chief Executive Eversheds LLP Reviewed October 4 5
4 Significant Environmental Aspects Paper Usage Waste Figures The environmental aspects of our operations are identified and recorded in a register. Our most significant environmental aspects are energy and paper usage, travel and waste production. All UK sites have the same aspects. We ensure that significant environmental issues are reviewed each year when setting annual environmental objectives and targets. The key activities of Eversheds produce large quantities of printed material, and the firm aims to reduce levels produced, and ensure that all discarded paper is recycled. General The firm only uses paper produced from sustainable forests (FSC certified). Paper production produces emissions to air such as carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases. It also consumes thousands of litres of water per tonne of paper produced. Recycling Indirect Aspects of Significance Data shown are for all UK offices. Upon request information per office can be provided. Percentage recycled Direct Aspects of Significance Travel Energy Usage We recognise that business travel is a major contributor to the firms carbon footprint. Travel by car, bus, train or plane produces large levels of nitogen oxides, carbon dioxide and PM1. To minimise our effect on the planet, travel by public transport is actively promoted and private car use discouraged. The following figures show car mileage has decreased significantly since. The register is also regularly reviewed to ensure that any new activities are considered and any previously unidentified aspects are accounted for. Energy usage mostly effects the enivironment through the use of non-renewable resources and subsequent production of carbon emissions. Energy consumption is based on the amount of electricity and gas used. The weather has a significant effect on the consumption of energy - be it for heating in the winter or cooling in the summer. As a significant energy consumer Eversheds are covered by The Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC). Electricity Figures 12,718,215 kwh 14,224,696 kwh 16,981,595 kwh. Gas Figures 6 9,131,83 kwh 11,267,191 kwh 1,18,497 kwh. 33 tonnes 336 tonnes 368 tonnes (March - December). 72,74 miles 933,552 miles 1,154,773 miles. The environment impacts of using water, range from minimal to significant, depending on the location and time of year/season. During and, water consumption considerably decreased. Data currently excludes Edinburgh and Newcastle tonnes tonnes tonnes 1,51.2 tonnes 1,848.7 tonnes Indirect aspects created as a result of our operations are also identified and recorded in our aspects register and reviewed on an annual basis. These aspects include those related to the activities of our suppliers when carrying out work for us. Many of these aspects are not our responsibility but where reasonably practicable we work with our suppliers to drive them down. 71.7% 71.2% Waste information Materials recycled (tonnes) (tonnes) Paper 1, , Cardboard Glass Plastic Cans Other/ mixed tonnes Waste Production Water Figures Some methods of waste disposal produce air pollutants and greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. As landfill waste decomposes methane is produced in significant quantities. In our offices water is purely used for domestic use and although there is a plentiful supply in the UK it is important to protect our water supplies by reducing our consumption. By using less water we can reduce the energy required to treat and distribute water at source, as well as the energy needed to heat the water in the office. The firm aims to reduce the production of waste wherever possible by promoting the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle). Numerous waste streams are recycled including plastics, cardboard, cans, glass and fluorescent lighting. 42,78 m3 49,913 m3 58,146 m3 7
