1. General notes The ACO TRIPLEX-K-2 backflow valve is designed to protect dwellings and properties from backflow surcharge and conforms to the requirements of BS EN :2002, Anti-flooding devices for buildings Part1: Requirements and is suitable for use with grey water connections (not containing faeces). The backflow safety valve is equipped with two backflow flaps - a primary flap and a secondary flap that can also be manually locked shut (emergency) flap. The TRIPLEX-K-2 range is available with its own access chamber or in situations requiring deep set pipe inverts, can be installed within a manhole. Optional fittings can provide for a fully bonded DPM as well as access chamber extension pieces. Clause 2.8 of Approved Document H Building Regulations (2002), drainage and waste disposal (England & Wales) states Combined and rainwater sewers are designed to surcharge (i.e. the water level in the manhole rises above the top of sewer pipe) in heavy rainfall. Some foul sewers also receive rainwater and therefore surcharge. For low-lying sites (where the ground level of a site or the level of a basement is below ground level at the point where the drainage connects to the public sewer) care should be taken to ensure the property is not at risk of flooding. In all such cases the sewerage undertaker should be contacted to determine the extent and possible frequency of the likely surcharge. For Scotland, Part M Building Standards (2001), drainage and sanitary facilities apply in a similar manner. Clause 2.9 of Part H Building Regulations (2002) also states that for basements containing sanitary appliances where the risk of flooding due to surcharge of the sewer is considered by the sewerage undertaker to be low, an anti-flooding valve should be installed on the drainage from the basement. Additionally, where the risk of flooding is considered to be high, the drainage from the basement should be pumped. If pumped solutions are required, please contact ACO Building Drainage technical helpline on or buildingdrainage@aco.co.uk As part of the building maintenance programme and after commissioning, the backflow valve should be inspected on a monthly basis and serviced every six months. This manual contains important information and guidance notes. Please read the manual thoroughly prior to installing a unit. The equipment should only be installed, commissioned, operated and maintained by persons who are familiar with the operating manual, the instructions there-in and the relevant regulations for job safety and accident prevention. 3
2. Function The ACO TRIPLEX consists of two main units: The primary flap and the secondary/emergency flap. The device is non-motorised and depends on backflow to force the primary flap shut. In this application the device is only suitable for grey wastewater not containing solids. The body unit is manufactured from heavy duty polypropylene which is highly corrosion resistant and suitable for hot water and domestic waste water. Smooth waterway surfaces and a 12mm stepped fall allow unrestricted flow through the backflow body. (Fig. 1). Should backflow occur in the drainage system, the primary flap is forced closed preventing backflow into the premises. After backflow has subsided, and primary flap is free to allow wastewater to flow through to the sewer. Fig. 1 Note that during backflow conditions the drainage system should not be used as wastewater is unable to pass through the closed backflow stop resulting in an internal back up condition with risk of self-flooding. 3. 5 4. Set up ACO backflow stops are supplied with an in-built stepped 12mm gradient. When preparing groundworks ensure that there are no backfalls on the pipe run. Note that during backflow conditions appliances and sanitary connections below the surcharge level should not be used, as wastewater is unable to pass through the closed backflow stop resulting in an internal back up condition with risk of self-flooding. Wrong Right Accidental self-flooding Do not use basement appliances 4.1 Drainage appliances and sanitary connections above the backflow level must not be connected to the foul drainage system upstream of the backflow stop. Closure of the backflow stop will prevent drainage from leaving the building and may result in accidental self-flooding of lower levels if used. 4.2 To prevent accidental self-flooding, connections to the foul drainage systems that are from above the backflow level must be made downstream of the backflow stop. Closure of the backflow stop will prevent backflow from flooding at lower levels whilst drainage from above the backflow level will continue to function as a result of natural displacement. 5
5. Preparation Before installation, carefully inspect (flaps, seals, body casing etc.) for any signs of transit damage. A damaged unit must not be put into operation. If any damage is found, contact the supplier immediately. 5.1 The ACO TRIPLEX-K-2 is a passive backflow valve intended for use with grey waste water (not containing sewage). The backflow valve is equipped with two passive flaps, a primary flap and a secondary flap that can be manually operated as an emergency flap. In normal operating conditions both flaps are open in the ready position. (Fig. 4). Fig When backflow occurs, water levels in the sewer rise above the safe pipe filling height forcing the primary flap shut, if for any reason the primary flap fails to fully close the secondary flap (emergency) flap will be forced shut. (Fig. 5). Fig When the backflow condition abates and the water level subsides, normal flow through the backflow valve resumes. 5.4 The use of the secondary flap as an emergency flap provides additional security that allows the backflow stop to be manually locked. This may be useful during maintenance or extended periods of absence, for example vacation, but it is essential to be reopened before using the drainage system again. (Fig. 6). Fig Note that during backflow conditions the building drainage system should not be used as wastewater is unable to pass through the closed backflow stop resulting in an internal back up condition with risk of self-flooding. 6
6. Operating the emergency flap Before installing the backflow valve it is important to be familiar with the settings and operation of the emergency flap. Important! Locking can only be effected by following two steps. 6.1 Emergency flap open Normal position. Locking lever in down position (the primary flap will shut in the event of backflow). 6.2 Emergency flap locking Pull locking lever to the vertically up position - you will hear a click sound. Flap locked. 6.3 Emergency flap re-opening Push locking lever to down position - you will hear a click sound. Flap unlocked. 7. Installation above ground Above ground drainage pipework - ACO TRIPLEX-K-2 without access chamber 7.1 The TRIPLEX-K-2 unit without access chamber, can be installed either wall mounted or, in situations requiring deep set invert levels, within a purpose built brick access chamber.( It will be necessary to build the chamber with sufficient room for standing access). 7.2 Install the body unit for correct flow direction and ensure the casing is absolutely level front to back and side-to-side. (Fig. 7). Protect all parts from damage and soiling from building materials. Note: Stepped drop of 12mm between inflow and outflow pipes. Fig The backflow stop features plain-ended pipe spigots for connection to most types of pipework - plastic, steel, cast iron, clay ware. (Fig. 8). Fig For wall mounted applications fixing brackets should be positioned on either side of the backflow stop pipe connections. (Fig. 9). 7.5 Ensure that both the primary and secondary/emergency flaps are in the ready position (refer to section 7 above). Fig. 9 7
8. Installation below ground Below ground drainage pipework - ACO TRIPLEX-K-2 with access chamber 8.1 Prepare a granular bed and install the body unit for correct flow direction and ensure the casing is absolutely level front to back and side-to-side. (Fig. 10). Protect all parts from damage and soiling from building materials. Note. Stepped invert drop of 12mm between inflow and outflow pipes. Fig The backflow stop features plain-ended pipe spigots for connection to most types of pipework -plastic, steel, cast iron, clay ware. (Fig. 11). Fig Backfill with adequate depth of granular bed to cover pipework. (Fig. 12). 8.4 Ensure that both the primary and secondary/emergency flaps are in the ready position (refer page 7 section 7). Fig DPM flexible flange (option): In situations where a waterproofing membrane is required in the subfloor, a flexible bonding flange (art. No ) can be site fitted to the factory fitted, (intermediate) ribbed chamber section. The DPM flange locates within one of the four ribbed grooves relative to the level of the waterproofing membrane. (Fig. 13). Fig. 13 8
8. Installation below ground - continued Below ground drainage pipework - ACO TRIPLEX-K-2 with access chamber 8.6 Optional access chamber extension. Depending on invert depth, an additional extension piece (part no ) can be site fitted onto the factory fitted extension piece (intermediate ribbed chamber section). Care must be taken to ensure the lip seal is correctly located. If required, the flexible DPM flange can be fitted within any one of the four grooves of the extension piece. (Fig.14). Fig Fit the telescopic top section to finished floor level and orientate for tiling layout. (Fig. 15). Fig Option - conversion to motorised QUATRIX version. If in the future it is required to convert the TRIPLEX backflow valve to a QUATRIX-K blackwater application, a 40mm conduit connection to the telescopic top section must be laid. Tank cut a 40mm (nominal) hole, (core bit diameter 43mm) and attach a 40mm conduit pipe, with necessary fittings. (Fig. 16). Install 40mm pipe conduit ensuring a fall towards the backflow chamber to relieve any condensation in the conduit pipework. Fig. 16 Note Dimension H1 minimum (see page 12) changes to 460mm. 8.9 Continue with floor construction. 9
8. Installation below ground - continued Below ground drainage pipework - ACO TRIPLEX-K-2 with access chamber 8.10 Before floor tiling, it is necessary to insert the reversible access cover. (Fig. 17). Insert O ring in upper groove Apply lubricant to O ring Reversible cover options:- Topside - ready finish, heavy duty ribbed ABS. Underside - for tiled infill. Note. Leave 5mm rebate to apply flexible sealant between outer edge of access frame and finished tile edge. Fig Tiled finish to access cover. The tiling face of the reversible cover is suitable for tiles up to 10mm thickness onto a 5mm adhesive bed. Ensure that the surfaces to be tiled are free from dust, grease and completely dry before applying tiling adhesive (suitable for plastic surfaces) to the cellular face of the cover. (Fig. 18). Fig. 18 Note. When laying floor the tiles the maximum possible filling height including bedding is 15mm On completion, the emergency flap must be in the ready position (refer page 7 section 7). 10
9. Inspection & Servicing 9.1 ACO recommend that the backflow stop is visually checked once a month and the emergency flap opened and closed to ensure correct function. A full service should be carried out at least twice yearly by an appropriately qualified engineer. The following service procedures must be carried out: Torque setting should be 5 8 Nm and tightening sequence as diagramme Fig Open emergency flap (refer page 7), undo brass nuts and carefully remove casing cover. Remove both flaps. Fig Inspect and clean seals to flaps and cover. Replace as necessary. Flush through the body unit. Fig Grease seals and re-insert both flaps taking care to seat seals correctly. Refit cover and tighten in sequence. Fig Close emergency flap (refer page 7). Fig Remove filler screw and fit screw-in graduated test funnel. Fig Fill chamber with clean water up to funnel upper edge (100mm). Fig Observe water level over 10 minute test period. If filling level drops, replenish to 100mm level. Record the total refill volume of water required. Fig Less than 500cm³ loss over the test period is a pass. Remove test funnel and replace filler screw. Open emergency flap (follow procedure on page 7). Fig Total water loss greater than 500cm³ will require flap check and retesting. If losses repeat, replacement flaps may be required. 11
