3 Slvent extractin is a methd fr the separatin f mixtures by using the differences in the slubilities f the cmpnents. The sample is immersed in the ht, biling slvent. Later n, the sample needs t be washed ff with fresh slvent. In autmated systems, as urs, this happens either by pulling ut the sample r by reducing the level f slvent. It is a «slid-liquid extractin», allwing sluble cmpnents t be remved frm slids using a slvent. 3

4 The use f slvent extractrs can be divided in tw grups f applicatin: Fat Determinatin Fr bth «crude» and «ttal» fats. Mst f the fd prducts cntain fat, but als nn-fd samples can be prcessed Sample Preparatin When slvent extractin cmes befre further tests t extract pllutants and cntaminatin elements, mainly frm envirnmental testing 4

5 «Crude» methds invlve disslving the material in a slvent such as ether r hexane and then evaprate the slvent. What remains, is called «crude fat». 5

6 The «ttal fat» test invlves analytical instruments that separate the fat cmpnents int varius fatty acids. Ttal fat analysis cnsists f tw steps: Hydrlysis In rder t determine encased fat the cell matrix needs t be brken up. When heat is applied, the hydrchlric acid breaks fatty acids frm ther elements. Extractin The dried mass cntaining fat is extracted with slvents (e.g. petrleum ether), the slvent evaprated and the residue weighed. 6
