1 ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY SERVICES STRATEGIC PLAN Mission It is the primary mission of Environmental Health and Safety to support the academic and campus community in fulfilling its commitment to teaching, research, and public service. Vision It the Environmental Health and Safety Department endeavors to facilitate protection of human health and the environment, to ensure compliance with all environmental regulations, to use campus resources wisely, to design programs that are easy to use and nonintrusive, if at all possible, and to focus on preventative strategies to eliminate potential risks. Values Safety Safety is our number one Core Value the single motivation that guides everything we do. Our commitment to safety is an ongoing one that we strive to live up to every day. For EH&S, safety means: Putting safety first in all activities Safeguarding the environment Recognizing and correcting potential hazards Safety doesn t just happen. It springs from a series of guidelines that govern the activities of Students, Faculty and Staff. Training Effective training should reduce accidents on campus and enhance the methods that Students, Faculty and Staff use to perform their everyday tasks, thus improving their learning experience and productivity. Sustainability As the world's dependence on science and technology continues to grow, tomorrow's engineers and scientists need to be leaders in environmental excellence. The Missouri University of Science and Technology recognizes the importance of this environmental stewardship and has developed a comprehensive environmental management system (EMS) to meet its demands. Our EMS program is dedicated to integrating environmental stewardship into education, research, administration and business activities of the university. Missouri S&T's EMS is one of the leading programs in the country. In June 2001, the campus became the first university in the nation to obtain ISO certification for a campus wide EMS. Environmental Protection The Missouri University of Science and Technology endeavors to comply with all applicable local and federal regulations including those set forth by the EPA and the MDNR which in turn protects human health and the environment from the potential hazards of waste disposal, conserves energy and natural resources, reduces the amount of waste generated, and ensures that wastes are managed in an environmentally sound manner.
