3 A-3 Information about the project A3.1 Short description of the environmental problem Kruševac is a medium size city of 80,000 located in central Serbia. Solid waste collection and disposal is managed by the Public Enterprise Kruševac, and collected solid waste is disposed of at a landfill that was designed and constructed in The current landfill is equipped with some infrastructure for sanitary operations, but not all components of this infrastructure are currently operational, and they do not cover all of the territory of the landfill. According to its original design, the landfill has an expected lifetime of years, and this lifetime may be increased if the city is able to implement waste re-use and recycling programs to reduce the amount of solid waste that goes to landfill. At the same time, the PE Kruševac is receiving requests from other communities currently not served with solid waste collection and landfill to extend its collection and disposal services to those areas. A3.2 Origins and positive environmental impact of the project A3.2.1 Description of factors that inspired the project (driving forces) FR Yugoslavia is preparing new regulations, on the national level, which are compatible with EU standards. Realization of this project would be direct help for solving the existing problems in field of solid waste treatment in the country. With this project, solid waste management in Krusevac will be improved and correlated with high ecological standards. Krusevac municipality established cooperation with three smaller, neighboring municipalities in field of protection of confluence of River Rasina from pollution. A3.2.2 Project main goal and objectives The goals, which this project is maintaining, are: Better standard of inhabitants of Krusevac Environmental protection of Krusevac municipality Providing the conditions for future regional landfill with recycling centre A3.2.3 expected positive environmental effects A3.2.4 Health impact of the project A3.2.5 Size of population benefiting from the project implementation A3.2.6 Scale of impact Reduction of air pollution and elimination of soil and groundwater contamination with toxic substances.
