2 A-3 Information about the project A3.1 Short description of the environmental problem In Prilep the sewage system is complete for 70% of the town. The Local Self-Government Unit currently is working to complete the remaining 30% of the system that yet is unfinished. The proposed WWTP will collect water from all completed sections of the sewage system. The current wastewater sewage system in Prilep consists of primary and secondary systems. These two systems work together to collect wastewater from the city of Prilep and surrounding areas and then dispose untreated wastewater in the "Prilepska" River. This problem is multi-faceted. First, this waste contributes to the pollution of the "Prilepska" and ultimately, the "Crna" River, of which the "Prilepska" is a tributary. This problem is again compounded by farmer's utilization of the water from both the "Prilepska" and "Crna" rivers for irrigational purposes. This places all regional agricultural products, and moreover the people who consume them, at risk as well. In this way, the waste is not only a concern of the people of Prilep but for the entire region, including cross-border areas. In sum, the Prilepska, according to water classification standards employed in Macedonia, would be classified as Class IV, which is the lowest standard. With high levels of coli forms and BOD 5, the river poses a threat not only to the people of the region but to the natural habitats that would be found in the area as well. 3 Part B Water & Waste water B Technical and environmental information on project B-1 Project type B1.1 Project type The project is a completely new facility for wastewater treatment. B1.2 Technical description Through the feasibility study, the most appropriate solution was found to be the extended areation process. This process comprises an oxidation ditch together with final clarifiers and pumps to recirculate sludge to the ditch or areation tank. The retention period in the areation stage is at least 18 hours. The end-product of the process is a high quality, nitrified effluent however denitrification can also be achieved if necessary. Advantages of this process include simple construction, relatively simple operation, and no requirement for primary settlement. The sludge produced does not require further treatment apart from dewatering. This process also requires less electro-mechanical equipment than conventional activated sludge. The purifying process begins with the wastewater flowing through a coarse screen to an inlet pumping station, with an option for overflow on high-peak days. The effluent then passes through fine screens, or alternatively, a screen bypass, followed by grit chambers. The effluent is stored in areation tanks, afterwhich it proceeds to final settling tanks. From there the stablilized sludge is ready for mechanical dewatering through belt presses, plate presses or centrifuges. The preferred disposal of the sludge is to farmland, a practice already used in Macedonia. The detail engineering designs will include the highest level of detail for the proposed facility.
