Every decision we make keeps the future in mind, that is how we sustain stewardship. What do we mean when we talk about stewardship? We mean both environmental protection and human safety. At EMD, we take this concept not as an isolated aspect, but as an integral part of our business. That s why all the products, packaging and services in this brochure link safety, environmental protection and health along the entire process chain. Resources Careful use and conservation of resources is a cornerstone of sustainability. We have been committed to steadily lowering our energy consumption and the resulting emissions for over a decade. One of our current goals is to reduce CO 2 emissions by 20 percent between 2006 and Recycling On the production level, we have developed a collection system for chemical waste in recent years. Up to sixty percent of the waste we collect is used for reclaiming energy. Our sites recycle all materials possible: paper, glass, metal and plastic used during manufacture. Responsibility A main focus of our responsibility rests on our products; we therefore test the quality of every product before it is launched. Numerous facilities currently operate to ISO14001 standards and our main U.S. manufacturing site has been awarded RC status. We try to consider the entire product lifecycle, from manufacturing through storage to disposal. Our goal is to aid you in this process. 11 Packaging Other than products, does EMD have additional environmental friendly innovations? Yes! We test and develop new packaging innovations to find more economical and reusable ways to protect and transport our products. That way, you benefit from the perfect synergy of products matched with packaging. That s what s in it for you. EMD Chemicals Obviously, good products need good packaging but what makes packaging good? Virtually reliable protection Lightweight, inert materials Virtually no risk of contamination Less and recycleable material that needs to be disposed afterwards The challenge involves finding safe packaging for every product while at the same time doing justice to its specific properties. The only way to do that is by studying the materials you use in depth. That s why we test all packaging thoroughly before we approve it for use. We run temperature load tests on glass bottles, for instance. Conduct pressure resistance tests for reinforced cardboard. Calculate the fracture force (OPC = One Point Cut) for vials. Measure the impact resistance of the cardboard packaging we use for hazardous materials. Obtain NFPA certificates on our returnable container systems by fire testing containers on a regular basis. For all these tests we ve set up our own test bed. Our accomplishment has been the development of high quality, reliable packaging that protects people and the environment throughout the entire product lifecycle during transport and storage, in the laboratory, and eventual disposal. 11

12 Just in case Polycoated keeping liquids safely within Glass bottles still have their place in the laboratory as a highly inert material for daily use. The biggest problem is breakage or rather, the safety risks that glass shards and escaping chemicals pose for employees and the environment. An option that combines the best properties of glass and plastic is to use polycoated glass bottles from EMD. This is why we provide specific documentation for every product we supply. Our service includes data on how to store products correctly, how to handle chemicals safely, and how to avoid and dispose of waste. Our material safety data sheets (MSDS) inform customers about physical properties (such as melting point, boiling point, flashpoint), toxicological information, exposure controls and personal protection, handling and storage, stability and reactivity, accidental release measures, first aid measures and disposal. They cover all hazardous and most non-hazardous products in English and in many other languages. We provide our data sheets electronically for round-the-clock access. In the know Storage Guidelines and Workplace Safety Cards available online Where, how, which? EMD provides comprehensive online Storage Guidelines to make your lab safer. Since many chemicals have special storage requirements, there is a danger of storing incompatible substances. So to prevent accidents our website provides guidelines on safe storage, and on how to define storage groups in laboratory setups.
