2 Preface The Wally-Waste-Not Award Program (WWNAP) will reward 10 schools in the Salinas Valley for improving and implementing waste reduction programs (5 -R s - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot (composting) and Reveal) for the year. These efforts help Salinas Valley Recycles (SVR) achieve our goal of diverting 75% of Salinas Valley waste from landfills by complying with state laws, such as AB Mandatory Commercial and AB Mandatory Organics. Instructions provided below as follow: WWNAP theme for this year is to Feed the Blue & Feed the Green : Feed the Blue means that schools will be asked to put in extra effort to improve current recycling programs & Feed the Green means schools will be required to start a yard waste and/or food scrap collection program to divert the organic materials that is still present in the school trash (if available from your hauler). Here s how it works: Get your Principal s support Complete the application and submit by: Friday, September 22, 2017 Improve waste reduction/recycling programs by completing the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot & Reveal (5Rs) Activities Submit the final PowerPoint presentation by Friday, March 30, 2018 You Should Know: Only schools located in the Salinas Valley are eligible to participate (public, charter, and private schools are all eligible to apply). 5 5R s ACTIVITIES FORMS Activities must be recorded in the PowerPoint Presentation. Download at: Section 1: Reduce (5 Activities: 2 mandatory and 3 additional) 2 Mandatory Reduce Activities Schedule a free waste assessment by contacting Estela Gutierrez at before Friday, October 20, The waste assessment will establish your baseline diversion rate and determine which waste streams can be reduced and if the school needs to adjust garbage and recycling services. SVR staff will work with the school and local garbage and recycling haulers to implement any service level changes. Encourage a school-wide practice of double-sided printing, copying, and student work by setting the default for copiers and printers to duplex printing. Post signs at printers, copiers, and fax machines to remind staff to reduce paper use by double-siding. 3 Additional Reduce Activities. Select a minimum of 3 from the list below: Use reusable trays instead of single-use trays in the cafeteria. Coordinate a waste-free lunch day where students and teachers pack food only in reusable containers. Visit for more information. Conduct a lunchtime waste assessment to show students how much food and lunch packaging goes into the garbage. Visit Organize a classroom activity to identify over-packaged items that students use or buy. Have students write letters to a manufacturer to request a reduction in packaging or to take back non-recyclable or difficult-to-recycle products. Subscribe to on-line publications (journals, magazines, newsletters, etc.) rather than receiving hard copies. In the teacher or staff break room, replace disposable products with permanent ware (mugs, dishes, utensils, etc.) and use refillable containers for sugar, salt and pepper, etc. Encourage cafeteria staff to switch to bulk condiments for ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, etc. instead of individual disposable condiment packets. Organize a cleanup around the school, neighborhood area or city park. Identify the location and number of garbage and recycling bags filled in the PowerPoint Summary. Have students separate all the small pieces of plastic (micro-trash) and create an art project. Share the story with the school about the dangers of small plastic pollution in the oceans. Visit for more information. Describe a Reduce activity of your choice (pre-approval required contact Estela Gutierrez at ): Page 5 of 10
6 Section 2: Reuse (5 Activities Total: 2 mandatory and 3 additional) 2 Mandatory Reuse Activities Create a system for teachers to collect and give away unwanted school supplies for next year s students to use. At least one classroom or equivalent participates in a charity reuse collection program such as: Food Drive for Monterey County Food Bank, Teddy Bears with Hearts, One Warm Coat, The Princess Project (prom dresses), the Pantene Beautiful Lengths Program (hair donation for wigs), or local charity or program of your choosing. Specify the activity on the application form. 3 Additional Reuse Activities. Select a minimum of 3 from the list below: Organize a BYORB day at school: Bring Your Own Reusable Lunch Bag or Bring Your Own Reusable Water Bottle Have a least one class or classes to watch the plastic pollution video of the Midway Atoll created by CNN Organize a class supplies swap so students may trade toys, equipment, books, or other items. At least one classroom or equivalent needs to participate to receive credit. Specify activity: Hold a fashion show using reused or salvaged materials. Have school s toner and ink cartridges refilled for reuse. Write a letter to school board members informing them about the benefits of using reusable trays and silverware over disposables. Find out more information in this case study Organize a fundraising rummage sale for old toys/clothes with proceeds donated to a local charity. Use recycled materials for an art project or assignment, or purchase art supplies from a second-hand store (i.e. Savers, RAFT, Goodwill, Salvation Army). For art project ideas visit: or Purchase used or refurbished indoor furniture (chairs, desks, cabinetry, flooring, etc.) and equipment with one or more of the following attributes: (1) made with 100% recycled materials, (2) contains no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or are certified for reduced indoor air emissions, (3) made from rapidly renewable materials (i.e. linoleum or bamboo). Specify the items: Donate unwanted furniture, computers, or supplies for reuse or use a waste exchange program where another school can take your unwanted items such as or (Reuse within your school district is encouraged). Offer lanyards or another form of reusable visitor tags instead of disposable stickers or labels. Use chalkboard signs or reuse large banners at school events instead of re-printing them. Visit for more information. Activities must be recorded in the PowerPoint Presentation. Download at: Page 6 of 10
7 Section 3: Recycle (6 Activities Total: 4 mandatory & 2 additional) 4 Mandatory Recycle Activities Reassess Stations (recycling bin paired with a trash can along with a recycling poster) in each classroom, office, work station, staff break-room, work/copy room, common area, and kitchen or cafeteria to ensure all the recycling bins are still in place. Ensure that only clear plastic liners are used in recycling bins (no black trash bags). ( containers and posters will be provided by Salinas Valley Recycles). Schedule staff or classroom recycling presentations with Salinas Valley Recycles. Contact Estela Gutierrez at to schedule a presentation. Create an organized system for collection of recycling by establishing a student group (Green Team or Team) that monitors and spot-checks your school s recycling bins on a weekly basis. This group will also be responsible for continuing to educate students on what is and isn t recyclable. Salinas Valley Recycles school recycling video can be viewed at: Schedule a FREE Wizard Assembly Show to continue educating staff and students about the importance of recycling. (Contact Estela Gutierrez at to schedule). 2 Additional Recycle Activities. Select a minimum of 2 from the list below: Ensure your school collects and properly disposes of used batteries, fluorescent light bulbs, and electronics generated at the school. For more information, visit Create a recycling pledge. Have students sign a pledge to recycle at home and school and have them list four items that they will recycle. Recycle ink cartridges. Turn ink cartridge recycling into a fundraising opportunity: or Participate in a TerraCycle program to recycle items such as juice pouches, Lunchables, chip bags, etc., that would otherwise go in the garbage: Recycle old school supplies by participating in the National Crayon Recycle Program: or in the Elmer s Glue Crew recycling program: Collect and recycle bottles and cans for fundraising. Visit to find the closest buy-back centers. Establish a system to collect plastic bags (bag-in-bag) in the kitchen and recycle them. Start recycling at school sporting events by pairing recycling containers with trash cans and recycle materials collected. Have older students act as a Buddy to younger students to teach them about recycling at school. Assign an adult lunchtime monitor to remind students to sort and correctly place their recyclables. Tour one of the SVR facilities. For more information on tour locations and to schedule a tour visit our website Create a zero waste station at the cafeteria (one bin for trash, one for recycling, one for food waste and one bin for liquids). Activities must be recorded in the PowerPoint Presentation. Download at: Page 7 of 10
8 Section 4: Rot (5 Activities Total: 3 mandatory & 2 additional) Activities must be recorded in the Power Point Presentation. Download at: es.org 3 Mandatory Rot (Compost) Activities Separate yard trimmings from garbage for composting. This can be accomplished by signing up for yard waste collection service with your garbage and recycling hauler or demonstrate existing collection plans (see page 3 for hauler information). Conduct a waste assessment in the cafeteria during lunch to separate all the food waste and milk waste. (Prevention is more important than diverting the leftover milk. Schools can initiate a campaign to reduce milk waste or food waste by encouraging students to take only what they need and eat or drink everything they take). Schedule a composting presentation conducted by SVR staff and/or the garbage and recycling hauler. Contact Estela Gutierrez at to schedule a presentation. At least one classroom or equivalent needs to participate to receive credit. 2 Additional Rot Activities. Select a minimum of 2 from the list below: Introduce a *food scrap recycling and collection program for the cafeteria. *Food scrap collection services are only available for Salinas schools and schools located in the unincorporated county areas at this time. Additional fees may apply. Create a food share station during lunch in the cafeteria. Oakland Unified School District is diverting edible food from the landfill by setting food share station. They have a guide available online at for school districts. Start an onsite compost or worm bin for food scraps and landscaping materials. Compost and worm bins can be purchased at or call Set-up a milk carton diversion program during lunch. All cartons need to be empty and bagged in a clear plastic bag for recycling. Write a letter to the school district trustees about the benefits of installing a milk dispenser instead of using single-use milk cartons. Find more information at Coordinate a 1-day Zero Waste Lunch. Use one smaller garbage container at lunch time to emphasize the reduced need for garbage (must be 50% smaller than recycling or food scraps containers). Visit: or Have a student group or class conduct a survey of student s recycling and composting habits and attitudes (summary of survey results must be recorded in the WWNPP).
