12 Societal Challenge 5: Climate action, environment, resource efficiency raw materials (1) Objective: "to achieve a resource water efficient climate change resilient economy society, the protection sustainable management of natural resources ecosystems, a sustainable supply use of raw materials, in order to meet the needs of a growing global population within the sustainable limits of the planet's natural resources ecosystems." 12

15 Strategic programming in H2020 (1) Work programme preparation based on guidance obtained from a strategic programming exercise To increase impact of the funding, a more integrated approach Work programmes with a 2 year-duration Leitmotif of the first work programme is the economic crisis the path to sustainable growth - Horizon 2020 can make a significant contribution to this effort 15

16 Strategic programming in H2020 (2) 'Key drivers' used to identify areas on which resources effort will be focused for maximum impact o sustainable competitiveness, innovation growth; o leveraging engagement of industry, including SMEs; o access to finance; o developing new knowledge contributing to skills; o deployment of enabling technologies; o measures to address the research innovation divide; o supporting strong partnership with Member States; o strategic approach to international cooperation. 16

18 Focus Areas (2) Strategic programming identifies focus areas, each covered by a specific call, that: o o o o Bring together activities from different challenges enabling technologies Provide support across the innovation chain from research, to development, to proof of concept, piloting, demonstration projects, to setting stards policy frameworks. 21 Horizon 2020 SC5 AG: objectives tasks Objective: to provide consistent consolidated advice to the Commission services on relevant objectives scientific, technological innovation priorities for the strategic programme /or annual work programmes by way of opinions, recommendations or reports. In addition, the AG may Act as a focal point for processing inputs from across the society Provide recommendations on potential expert evaluators 21

22 Horizon 2020 SC5 AG: conflict of interest Experts are required not to divulge information given in the context of the work of the AG, unless specifically released from such obligation Experts must not use confidential information documents for any purpose other than fulfilling their obligations must not seek nor act in any way to take advantage of or exercise undue influence on the implementation of Horizon 2020 AG membership is not compatible with assisting the Commission with proposal evaluation or project monitoring in the area of R&I covered by SC5 acting as a delegate/representative or an expert/adviser in the Programme Committee. 22

23 Horizon 2020 SC5 AG: procedural issues Duration of service : two years with maximum one renewal Renewal of the group: up to half of the AG will be replaced every second year (i.e. at the beginning of 2016 again at the beginning of 2018). Frequency of meetings: 3-4 per year Information on meetings: a dedicated CIRCA site to be created Scheduling of future meetings: via Doodle tool Information on H2020 AGs (membership, reports): web page on EUROPA to be created shortly 23

24 Horizon 2020 SC5 AG: role of the Chair, Vice-chair rapporteur All posts are for the next 2 years AG Chair will o o o o chair SC5 AG meetings coordinate with other AGs convey the final outcomes of the AG work to the Commission present outcomes of the AG work to Commission services Programme Committee, etc Vice-Chair will replace the Chair when required. The rapporteur will take notes of AG discussions as inputs to AG advice reports draft AG reports/recommendations/opinions. 24

29 Sustainable development climate action in H2020 Sustainable Development = social, economic, environment economic capital 100% = contributes explicitly to one pillar, adds to others; 40% = adds to one pillar, assesses impact on others; 0% = otherwise. Climate action 100% = climate is principal aim 40% - climate is important but not principal aim 0% = no or little contribution to climate 29
