Renewable Energy National Strategy On February 2008, the Supreme Energy Council approved the Egyptian Renewable Energy National Strategy to Satisfy 20% of the generated electricity by 2020 using renewable energies, For Wind Energy: This strategy includes providing 12% of the generated electricity (7200 MW) from wind energy by For Solar Energy: On July 2012 the Cabinet approved the Egyptian Solar Plan which includes adding 3500 MW of Solar Energy by 2027
Hydro Power Installed capacity from hydro is 2830 MW Hydro power represents 9% from the generated electrical energy.
Morocco Spain Algeria Western Arab countries Europe Tunisia Libya 120 MW EGYPT 200 MW 350 MW 2000 MW Sudan Turkey Lebanon Jordan 3000 MW Eastern Arab countries Syria Iraq Gulf Arab Countries Saudi Arabia Kuwait Bahrain 3200 MW Ethiopia Emirates Qatar In operation Under preparation African Countries Oman
Power Projects Plans Until 2027 During the next 3 5 year plans, MW will be added to MW which presents the installed capacity till Total (MW) (MW) (MW) (MW) This installed capacity will be diversified from oil, gas, solar, wind, Hydro and nuclear resources
Local Manufacturing The Ministry Of Electricity & Energy (MOEE) established a localization program for Design, Installation and manufacture of Components of electrical equipment. The following are now achieved: 100 % of the Transmission Networks up to 220 KV. 100% of the Distribution Network components up to 66 KV. 42 % of power plants components. 30% of the wind energy equipment (70% at the end of 2020). 50% local share in the 1st solar thermal power plant project.
Some Challenges facing the Egyptian Electricity Sector To decrease the dependence on thermal power generation through diversifying energy resources. To decrease the irrational consumption of Energy. To solve the problem of fuel supply shortage. To increase the investments required for future projects. To set pricing mechanism for compromising the benefits between energy producer & consumer.
Egyptian Nuclear Power Plants Program Egypt was one of the countries that early realized the importance of nuclear power to secure the supply of electricity. Egypt has started its NPP program several decades ago but the program stopped several times. In year 2007, Egypt has reconsidered the nuclear power as an option to supply electricity. Egypt was motivated to consider the introduction of nuclear power by the following factors: Steadily increasing demand for electricity. Shortage of fossil energy resources. Almost fully utilized hydro power resources.
The nuclear power could support the development of the Egyptian industrial and scientific sectors. Since 2007 Egypt has taken important Steps to launch its NPP. This includes the Cooperation with IAEA, to support the Egyptian infrastructure for introducing NPPs. One of the important studies that were conducted in cooperation with IAEA experts was the Energy Planning Study up to year The study has been recently revised by IAEA experts who recommended the update procedure.
Current Situation of the NP Project Egypt has completed the following stages: Nuclear Law enacting. Establishment of an independent Regulatory Body. Site Selection. Nuclear Technology Selection. Development of Fuel Supply Strategy. Preparation of BIS for the first NPP.
Two reasons caused the delay of inviting for bids: After the revolution of Jan. 25, the Cabinet decided to postpone the tendering process until the election of the parliament so as to secure the new government commitment to the project. After Fukushima accident, the technical specifications have been reviewed by IAEA experts, the consultant engineers as well as the Egyptian nuclear regulatory body to embody the lessons learned from the accident in the specs.
As a consequence: Keeping on developing of NPPA human resources capabilities. In this regards cooperation with the IAEA is very important and crucial to the Egyptian Nuclear Power Program. The tendering documents for NPP are ready for international bidding once the Egyptian government takes the decision to resume the project. It is expected that the Parliament will take the decision to resume NPP Project this year, so it is supposed that the project time schedule will be shifted by 2 years. Accordingly, the 1 st unit would be in operation by 2021 and the 4 th one in 2027.
