3 Polyurethanes for the rail industry The Dow Chemical Company supplies tailor-made polyurethane systems to the rail and tram industry by providing solutions that deliver more stable ballast and tracks, greater passenger comfort from controlled shock and vibration, and protection from weathering, abrasion and corrosion. Energy Absorbing Components That Last Dow s microcellular polyurethane elastomers are made to meet individual vibration and shock control requirements in a variety of applications, with low-cost tooling in many mold configurations. Dow s elastomers possess excellent dynamic properties and are extremely durable. They can be used for high speed rail pads and rolling stock buffers. Ballast Protection Dow s chemistry is an integral part of XiTRACK Geocomposite Technology, which is a threedimensional polyurethane system that strengthens and stabilizes rail ballast while reducing maintenance in track renewal and upgrade. XiTRACK combines advanced chemistry and state-of-the-art computer modelling simulation as a solution for identifying and repairing the ballast deformation. XiTRACK Geocomposite Technology restores balance performance in a single treatment by reducing vertical and horizontal track movement, which can lead to degraded ballast. Track stabilization using XiTRACK technology is quick and cost effective, providing minimal disruption in service during application.

4 VECTOR System Noise, Vibration and Stray Current Attenuation Dow s polyurethane chemistry is used to produce solutions and products that help reduce noise and vibration for trains and trams: Vector System is a premier system designed to isolate vibration while providing excellent electrical insulation. Vector is for grooved or conventional rails and is based on a factory pre-moulded Dow elastomer boot fitted to the rail before installation. Vector System is easy to install.

5 SERIES SIX Rail Embedment An alternative to Vector, Series Six A rail embedment also provides excellent vibration dampening and electrical insulation. Series Six rail embedment is a non-foaming, pour-in-place liquid polymer that is a composite of elastomer and cork allowing for strong flexibility, long term adhesion, and high resistance to abrasion and tear.

6 Silent Track Silent Track is a proven noise damping system for railways. Dow s polyurethane system encapsulates tuned sound absorbers that are either attached to the rail before installation or retrofitted in service. Test track results show that using Silent Track noise damping system can reduce peak track noise levels by 5-7 db(a).

7 Waterproofing and Surfacing Systems for Rail Infrastructure Dow offers waterproofing solutions to help ensure safe walking surfaces and prevent abrasion and corrosion of rail infrastructure. Dow s TRAFFIDECK Waterproofing and Surfacing Systems are multi-layer polyurethane systems that protect rail platforms, bridges, footbridges, and tunnels from water damage while also providing a reducedslip surface for passengers and workers. The system is easy to apply, with excellent bend ability and crack-bridging properties. Dow s also offers HYPERKOTE Polymer Coating Systems, which work to protect concrete, timber and steel from weathering, abrasion and corrosion. When applied to bridges, concrete track, footbridges and rolling stock, the product can help to extend the working life of the structure and can also help reduce maintenance costs. The TRAFFIDECK system is available in a wide range of UV-stable colors. The system also can be covered by warrantees when installed by approved contractors who meet quality standards and follow installation procedures.
