1/7 Molecule model of Methane (CH 4 ), the principal component of natural gas. OVERVIEW: EU-FINANCED LNG FOR SHIPPING PROJECTS MARKIS report Johan Algell, johan.algell@smtf.se
2/7 Background Norway started to explore the possibilities to use LNG as a sustainable fuel for shipping in the beginning of the 21st century. The presentation of the revised IMO MARPOL Annex VI in 2008 generated an interest for the Norwegian development also outside of Norway and today there is a global interest to introduce LNG as fuel for shipping. The main reason for this interest is that LNG has the potential to combine an attractive environmental performance with a competitive cost level and that the technology is proven. Also within the EU, the topic has generated significant interest and especially in Northern Europe there are several on-going projects addressing this matter. To increase the level of cooperation between the different projects, the MARKIS project together with Swedish Marine Technology Forum and Region Västra Götaland invited nine other EUfunded projects for a combined seminar/workshop in Gothenburg on 11 October In addition to MARKIS, the following five projects participated at this event. BSR Marchain Clean Baltic Sea Shipping Clean North Sea Shipping LESAS North European LNG Infrastructure Project Purpose The purpose of this document is to produce an overview of on-going EUfunded LNG for shipping related projects. The main focus is to present basic information and contact details on the projects that were present during the workshop in Gothenburg, but also some information will be presented in relation to the other invited projects.
3/7 Project descriptions Below, each project including MARKIS is given a brief description with a focus on the parts related to LNG for shipping. For more detailed information, please refer to the website of the particular project. In addition, some presentational material from each project participating at the workshop is available at the MARKIS download webpage: NORTH EUROPEAN LNG INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT Contact: Mogens Schrøder Bech, Danish Maritime Authority, , MB@dma.dk Lead partner: Danish Maritime Authority, DENMARK. Participants: ÅF and SSPA (consultants), 14 in-kind contributors. Project website: Time period: LNG infrastructure project and full scale pilot. EU support: Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) programme, Motorways of the Seas (MoS). The project consists of an infrastructure part and a full scale pilot project. The aim of the infrastructure part is to set up recommendations on the establishment of a marine LNG infrastructure encompassing a hard one on filling stations and a soft one on regulations and industry standards, etc. The geographical scope is the Baltic Sea, the North Sea and the English Channel. The aim of the full scale pilot project is to convert two new cruise ferries to be fuelled by LNG and get operational experience in international Short Sea Shipping. Topics/Activities: Feasibility study for an LNG filling station infrastructure. Deployment of LNG as ship fuel. LNG deliverables: A feasibility report on a LNG infrastructure with recommendations and operational experience from use of LNG as fuel in international Short Sea Shipping. A baseline report and a draft feasibility report with recommendations are available at the DMA website. The final results of the feasibility study will be ready by March 2012.
4/7 CLEAN NORTH SEA SHIPPING (CNSS) Contact: Even Husby, Hordaland County Council, , Lead partner: Hordaland County Council, NORWAY. Participants: 18 beneficiaries (see webpage). Project website: Time period: EU support: North Sea Region Programme (INTERREG IVB). Improve the environmental and health situation caused by air pollution and greenhouse gases from shipping along the North Sea coast and within North Sea ports. Topics/Activities: Study of available technologies, showcases on LNG and onshore power supply. LNG deliverables: Definition of LNG supply chain, bunkering procedures, regulatory framework, safety issues, environmental impact, cost-benefit analysis, market and trend analysis, stakeholder demands. The results will be presented as a visual showcase. MARKIS MARITIME COMPETENCE AND INNOVATION SKAGERRAK & KATTEGAT Contact: Agneta Pettersson, Region Västra Götaland, , agneta.pettersson@vgregion.se Lead partner: Region Västra Götaland, SWEDEN. Participants: 16 partners (see webpage). Project website: Time period: EU support: Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak Programme (INTERREG IVA). The vision is to establish a maritime region with no harmful emissions to air and water from shipping and globally Topics/Activities: Alternative marine fuels, cleaning technology, lightweight design, energy efficiency, etc. LNG deliverables: Analysis of competence/educational needs with respect to the use and handling of LNG as ship fuel. The analysis will support the development of educational courses and programmes for different LNG stakeholders.
5/7 CLEAN BALTIC SEA SHIPPING CLEANSHIP Contact: Jörg Sträussler, Baltic Energy Forum, , Lead partner: Port of Trelleborg, SWEDEN; Baltic Energy Forum, GERMANY. Participants: 20 formal partners (see webpage). Project website: Time period: EU support: Baltic Sea Region Programme Reduce ship borne air pollution in the Baltic Sea in general and in ports in particular. Topics/Activities: LNG, shoreside electricity, Environmental Port Index, sewage reception. LNG deliverables: Bio-LNG logistics from biogas plant to ships (by Port of Trelleborg), small-scale LNG infrastructure to ships from large LNG import terminal (by Port of Klaipeda), ship gas supply from local gas grid (by AIDA Cruises), LNG supply solutions for large cruise ships and ferries (by Port of Rostock). BSR MARCHAIN Contact: Andrius Sutnikas, KSTP, , Lead partner: Klaipeda Science and Technology Park (KSTP), LITHUANIA. Participants: 7 partners (see webpage). Project website: Time period: EU support: Baltic Sea Region Programme , BSR Stars, StarDust. MarChain is one of the pilots of the StarDust project.
