2 F R O M V I S I O N T O R E A L I T Y From Vision to Reality Solar Millennium's vision, since the founding of the company in 1998, has been to enable energy conversion through the construction of solar thermal power plants. With the development of the first European parabolic trough power plants, known as the Andasol power plants, and the delivery of the technology for the first Egyptian solar thermal plant in Kuraymat, Solar Millennium has already put this vision into practice. These plants are role models for the entire solar thermal electricity generation market and constitute a milestone on the path to a solar future. Welcome to the Solar Millennium! Solar Millennium combines ecology and economy where they are most closely linked: solar thermal power plants can make a sustainable contribution to the environmentally-friendly power production of the future while also constituting a growing world market, a basis for positive company development. The company follows a strategy of sustainable business and aims to reduce the dependence from fossil fuels to raise the stability in the supply of electricity with long term reliable prices. Solar Millennium is specialized in parabolic trough power plants, a proven, efficient and future-oriented technology. Due to the early entry, the company has made a decisive contribution to the development of the world market for solar thermal power plants. Solar Millennium strives to further extend its expertise in the area of solar thermal power plants with the aim of achieving and securing sustainable technology leadership. Solar Millennium Group & Desertec Dii is an unique industry initiative which has been launched as Desertec Industrial Initiative in July 009. On 0 October 009, Dii was legally founded with a company of the Solar Millennium Group amongst the shareholders. Dii s Mission is to enable the roll-out of the DESERTEC concept. Aim of the DESERTEC concept is to supply the MENA region (Middle East and North Africa) and Europe with power produced from sun and wind energy sources in the deserts. The long-term goal is to create a win-winsituation by satisfying both a substantial part of the energy needs of the MENA countries and to meet about 15% of Europe s electricity demand by 050. Local content for parabolic trough plants can reach up to 60 percent on average in the MENA region according to latest studies.

Condenser Parabolic trough power plants without thermal storage are suitable above all in sunny countries with a high peak load requirement; i.e. high peak demand in the midday and afternoon hours. Thermal molten salt storage allows for a significant increase in annual hours of operation and thus the electricity volume produced annual ly. It also makes reliable electricity production after sunset possible. Parabolic Trough Power Plants At a parabolic trough power plant, trough-shaped mirrors direct incidental solar radiation onto a pipe along the focal line of the collector. Its absorption heats a heat transfer fluid in the pipe, generating steam for the power block via heat exchangers. As with conventional power plants, the steam drives a turbine to generate electricity. By integrating thermal storage or hybrid operation, electricity can be supplied on demand, even after sunset. Solar thermal power plants are suitable for utility scale power generation with a 50 to 50 MW capacity. Advantages of Parabolic Trough Power Plants Efficient and Cost-effective Parabolic trough power plants are an efficient and cost-effective technology for converting solar energy into electricity on a power plant scale. Today, parabolic trough power plants are already an interesting option for covering peak load usage, even compared to conventional power plants. Possibility of Storing Thermal Energy Parabolic trough power plants allow cost-effective and efficient storage of heat energy. Thermal storage even enables the power plants to deliver electricity at night, contributes substantially to grid stability and increases the reliability of supply for industry and households. The Andasol Plants developed by the Solar Millennium Group are already working with a thermal storage. 4

Condenser At a hybrid power plant, the thermal energy from solar fields is combined with an additional source of energy to generate electricity; for example, a gas-steam power plant. This allows for steady, 4-hour operation. Nearly Unlimited Number of Location Options On a worldwide scale, there is an abundance of vast deserts and semi-arid regions. Less than three percent of the Sahara desert would suffice to meet the world's energy demand with parabolic trough power plants. Particularly Flexible Implementation Hybrid power plants can combine solar energy with other forms of power generation, such as natural gas or biogas. This means that parabolic trough power plants could reliably generate electricity on demand 4 hours a day. Other Solar Solutions In addition to parabolic troughs, Solar Millennium believes that of all the different solar thermal technologies, solar towers offer the greatest potential for commercial use. By establishing its own R&D department for solar tower technology in 010, Solar Millennium has set a course to evaluate the opportunities inherent in this technology early on. In the future, Solar Millennium also intends to apply PV in single projects according to market conditions in order to better utilize the potential of power plant surfaces, thus creating synergies. Proven Technology Parabolic trough power plants have proven their efficiency over a number of years. In California, nine such power plants have been generating environmentally friendly electricity in commercial operation for approximately 5 years. These power plants are an impressive demonstration of the reliability and sustainability of the technical components. Solar Millennium is constantly working at improving this technology. 5

7 Research and Development The Solar Millennium group pursues permanently to improve and expand its cutting-edge portfolio by further developing the parabolic trough technology: Optimization of collector design Y Skal-ET: Improved parabolic trough collector design Demonstration loop of 800 meters at Kramer Junction (California) tested in commercial operation since 00. Results: approx. 10 percent efficiency increase over previous collectors (project supported by the German Federal Ministry for Environment) Skal-ET collector design used in Andasol 1- and Kuraymat Y Helio Trough: Highly efficient collector design by Solar Millennium Group New collector generation developed by Solar Millennium s technology subsidiary Flagsol Successful test run in commercial operation in California since end of 009 Proof of high collector efficiency, setting new standards in specific cost reduction with parabolic trough collectors (project supported by the German Ministry for Environment and the US Department of Energy) Y Heat transfer fluids: Testing of alternatives to current fluids in the absorber tubes of parabolic trough power plants to increase temperature and therefore efficiency (e.g. molten salt replacing the oil/salt heat exchanger) Expansion of potential sites and usage Dry cooling in order to minimize water consumption Enhanced oil recovery by injecting steam produced in parabolic troughs into the oil deposits Desalination of sea water Electricity supply at mining locations Hybridization of conventional power plants 7
