What We ll Cover Goals/Actions for AIS Program Current Event Targeting AIS with MISGP

AIS State Management Plan Goal I: Prevent new introductions of AIS into Michigan waters. Goal II: Limit the dispersal of established populations of AIS into uninfested waters of the state. Goal III: Develop an early detection and rapid response program to address new AIS invasions. Finalized June, 2013 Goal IV: Manage and control AIS to lessen the harmful ecological, economic, social and public health impacts resulting from infestation of AIS.

DRAFT TIS State Management Plan GOALS Prevention Early Detection and Response Control, Management and Restoration Collaboration

Pathways Approach

Red Swamp Crayfish Most invasive crayfish worldwide Outcompete native species Dig complex burrows can cause bank destabilization Feed on vegetation and negatively impact water clarity (water becomes turbid) Reproduce in large numbers Listed as a prohibited species in 2015 to reduce risk of introductions MI anglers using live crayfish purchased from food markets in southwest MI Available to teachers for classroom projects disposal was identified as high risk

Red Swamp Crayfish Reports Initial report to Fisheries Division on July 14 th from Sunset Lake in Vicksburg (Kalamazoo County) Confirmed by FD Second report from Novi Retention pond on July 16th Confirmed by FD Increased awareness through statewide press release, social media, and signage Following up on over 100 public reports since press release was issued

Credible Reports

Potential Sources? Red swamp crayfish were widely available prior to 2015 Crayfish could have been introduced from releases linked to multiple vectors Biological supply for schools Live food markets Live bait Pet stores Law Enforcement Division has been active with enforcing regulations to prevent future introductions Over 600 inspections

Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program (MISGP) Established in 2014 Funded through annual appropriation by the Michigan legislature (general fund) First state funding stream dedicated to invasive species $11 million in grants

Michigan Invasive Species Grant Program (MISGP) Purpose: Strategically address the issues of prevention, detection, eradication and control of terrestrial and aquatic invasive species statewide
