Water is a priority United Nations Formed UN Water UN Water is an inter agency mechanism formally established in 2003

United Nations UN Water focuses on: Providing information Building the knowledge base Providing a platform for discussion and knowledge sharing

United Nations A coherent, coordinated approach is clearly required We must manage freshwater sustainably so that everyone has enough water to drink and stay clean and healthy Food producers must have enough water to satisfy the demands of growing populations

United Nations Industries have enough water to meet their needs Countries have opportunities to secure a reliable supply of energy Must be able to adapt to changes in the availability of freshwater Ensure public health and preserve ecosystems

Statistics How the world uses freshwater: About 70 % for irrigation About 22 % for industry About 8 % for domestic use Source: World Water Assessment Program (WWAP) Water use has been growing at more than twice the rate of population in the last century

Statistics The world's six billion people are appropriating 54 percent of all the accessible freshwater contained in rivers, lakes and underground aquifers. Source: WWAP How the world uses freshwater: Water withdrawals are predicted to increase by 50 percent by 2025 in developing countries, and 18 percent in developed countries. Source: Global Environment Outlook: environment for development (GEO 4)

Statistics In 60 percent of European cities with more than 100,000 people, groundwater is being used at a faster rate than it can be replenished. By 2025, nearly 2 billion people will be living in countries or regions with absolute water scarcity, and two thirds of the world population could be under stress conditions.
