3 Introduction This manual contains instructions for the use of the Orion AquaPro and Orion double junction electrodes. All AquaPro electrodes feature a patented double junction reference design. These electrodes use an isolated Ag/AgCl reference system and open junctions* for fast accurate readings in complex sample matrices without having the sample contact silver ions. Some of these electrodes are Low Maintenance (LM) non-refillable, offering the benefits of ease of use and minimal preparation. Double junction electrodes feature an isolated Ag/AgCl reference system which is refillable or gel-filled for general purpose samples. They offer an alternate to hazardous calomel reference electrodes. Operation and maintenance instructions for the following electrodes are included: Cat. 5 Electrode Preparation 1. Open junction electrodes will arrive in a storage bottle. Remove the electrode from the storage bottle containing Orion reference fill solution. Save the storage bottle for electrode storage needs. For the other electrodes, carefully remove the protective cap from ph measuring bulb and save for storage. 2. For electrodes other than the low maintenance that require reference filling solution use Cat. No Using a flipspout bottle or medicine dropper, add the filling solution to the reference chamber through the fill hole until the solution is just below the fill hole. Keep fill hole open during ph measurements. 3. Connect the electrode to the meter as described in the meter instruction manual Sample Requirements Electrodes having an epoxy outer body should not be used in samples containing organic solvents. AquaPro ph electrodes have an Ag/AgCl reference. Due to the unique polymeric reference system, the sample does not come in contact with silver ions. Double junction ph electrodes have an Ag/AgCl reference due to the double junction reference system, the sample does not come with silver ions. These electrodes can be used with samples containing silver complexing or binding agents such as tris and sulfides. Samples must be between 0 and 60 C. Measuring Hints Always use fresh buffers for calibration. Choose buffers that are no more than 3 ph units apart. Check electrode slope daily by performing a two-buffer calibration. Slope should be 92 to 102%. Between measurements, rinse electrodes with distilled water and then with the next solution to be measured. Stir all buffers and samples. 6 Keep buffers and samples at approximately the same temperature. If samples are at different temperatures, perform temperature compensation, as described in the meter instruction manual. Place a piece of insulating material (e.g., Styrofoam cardboard) between magnetic stirrer and beaker to prevent error from transfer of heat to sample. Avoid rubbing or wiping electrode bulb, to reduce chance of error due to polarization. ph Calibration and Measurement General Calibration Procedure For detailed calibration and temperature compensation procedures, consult your meter instruction manual. If a manual calibration is used, the temperature corrected ph value found on the label of the buffer, not the nominal value, will need to be entered into the meter for accurate measurements. Single-Buffer Calibration 1. Set up meter according to meter instruction manual. 2. Rinse electrode first with distilled water and then with buffer being used for calibration (the buffer should be near the expected sample ph). Place the electrode in the buffer. 3. Wait for a stable display (indicated by a ready signal on Orion meters). Autocalibration is a feature on ALL the Orion Star series meters. The meter automatically recognizes the standard buffers 4.01, 7.00, as well as the US buffers 1.68, 4.01, 6.86, 10.01, and Euro buffers 1.68, 4.01, 6.86 and Simply select the buffer sequence that best fits your application. During calibration, wait for a stable ph reading. Once the electrode is stable, the meter automatically recognizes and displays the temperaturecorrected value for that buffer. Pressing yes enters the value into memory for legacy meters. Pressing measure enters the value into memory for the Star meters. Manual Calibration: Set the meter to the ph value of the buffer at its measured temperature. Proceed to ph Measurement. 7 Two-Buffer Calibration This procedure is recommended for precise measurements. 1. Select two buffers that bracket the expected sample ph. The first should be near the electrode isopotential point (ph 7) and the second near the expected sample ph (e.g. ph 4 or ph 10). 2. Rinse electrode first with distilled water and then with first buffer. Place the electrode in first buffer. 3. Wait for stable display (indicated by a ready signal on Orion meters). Autocalibration is a feature on ALL the Orion Star series meters. The meter automatically recognizes the standard buffers 4.01, 7.00, as well as the US buffers 1.68, 4.01, 6.86, 10.01, and Euro buffers 1.68, 4.01, 6.86 and Simply select the buffer sequence that best fits your application. Pressing measure enters the value into memory for the Star meters. 6. If all steps are performed correctly, and the slope is between 92 and 102%, proceed to ph Measurement. Manual Calibration: Set the meter to the ph value of the buffer at its measured temperature. Proceed to ph Measurement. Refer to meter manual for instruction. 8 ph Measurement 1. Calibrate the electrode as described in previous section. 2. Rinse the electrode with distilled water and then with sample. 3. Place the electrode in the sample. 4. When the display is stable, record sample ph. 6 AquaPro and Double Junction Electrode Manual

9 Electrode Storage Short/Long Term Storage between measurements Rinse off with distilled water, and remove any membrane / junction deposits as directed in cleaning procedures. For short term storage, double junction or refillable electrodes must be stored in ph electrode storage solution, Cat. No For Low Maintenance AP electrodes with open hole, use the electrode storage bottle that was shipped with the electrode. Add 3 M KCl, Orion solution to the bottle. For long term storage use Cat. No or solution and or electrode storage bottles for the appropriate electrode. Ensure all electrodes are stored securely so they do not tip over and the bulb remains in solutions. 10 Electrode Maintenance 1. Inspect the electrode for scratches, cracks, salt crystal build-up, or membrane/junction deposits. Follow appropriate cleaning procedures. 2. Inspect the electrode for bubbles at the open junction. Gently tap the electrode or shake it down (like a clinical thermometer) to remove any bubbles Cleaning Procedures Rinsing with a perphect rinse solution is highly recommended prior to resuming ph calibration or sample measurement. Use Orion cleaning kits such as Orion , to remove any residue that distilled water or perphect rinse solution does not sufficiently remove from the electrode. Use Cleaner A (Orion ) for protein matrices, Cleaner B (Orion ) for removing bacterial contamination, Cleaner C (Orion ) for general cleaning, and Cleaner D (Orion ) for oils and greases. After cleaning, rinse well with distilled water. Soak the electrode in Orion ph storage solution for an hour before recalibrating.
