4 Development Efficient Determination of Thermal Properties From Crude to Distillates Thermal analysis of crude oil and petroleum fractions is required for smooth operation of refinery processes and ensuring product quality. Temperature stability, evaporation loss and wax appearance temperature are typical characteristics that must be measured. Temperature stability of petroleum fractions Noack evaporation loss determination of oils Wax appearance temperature of crude oil The determination of the oxidative induction temperature (OIT) is a rapid method for assessing the stability of petroleum fractions. The test is usually performed according to a standard, e.g. ASTM D6186 which applies pressure differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Our high pressure DSC is ideally suited to carrying out fast and reliable stability investigations of oils. For quality reasons lubricating oils should exhibit a low evaporation rate. The ASTM standard test method D6375 for the determination of the evaporation loss of lubricating oils by the Noack method uses thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The METTLER TOLEDO TGA system with sample robot and automated evaluation provides high sample throughput and fast pass/fail assessment of the oil. In order to predict and prevent the occurrence of wax deposition which can form at every step from oil production to refining, the wax appearance temperature (WAT) of crude oil needs to be known. 6 Crude Desalting Less Corrosion and Fouling and Lower Chemical Costs The main task of a desalter is to remove salt and dirt from the crude. It also makes sense to neutralize acids at this stage as otherwise downstream corrosion and fouling will take its toll. Only with accurate process measurements will these operations be truly effective. With unique expertise in refinery process analysis, METTLER TOLEDO has designed a range of instruments ideal for this purpose. Desalter performance on a new level Avoid overdosing chemical reagents Less oxygen, less corrosion The trend to refine more and more high sulfur sour crudes means refinery corrosion and fouling problems continue to grow. It is therefore fundamental to clean sour crude as much as possible, as early as possible. In the desalter, cleaning starts with maximizing the transfer of inorganic salts, rust and sediment from the crude to the water, followed by neutralization of acidic compounds, and ends with optimal dehydration. In-line ph measurement has enormous value in desalter operations. ph has a great influence on several process mechanisms, and its accurate control directly affects the efficiency and cost of desalter operations. The time lag between grab sampling and laboratory ph analysis, frequently results in overdosing of ph modifiers. Significant savings can be made with in-line measurement of ph as it allows for real-time control, meaning chemicals can be added exactly when necessary. Corrosion is a complex issue involving many contributing factors. Often, refinery operators feel compelled to use high-cost exotic materials in process equipment to prevent corrosion. However, more economical alternatives exist. One of these, which is often neglected, is reduction of the dissolved oxygen concentration in the desalter wash water. Water treatment based on this simple measurement can result in a significant reduction in downstream corrosion. 6

The long, helix shaped reference path and PTFE annular diaphragm provide a strong barrier against aggressive chemicals and oil. 8 Crude Distilling Continuous Measurement Under the Harshest Conditions Refinery and petrochemical operations present challenges that are not common to any other process industry. METTLER TOLEDO understands these and manufactures instruments that measure up to the task, no matter how tough. Sour water corrosion Consumption of chemicals ph control does the trick Steam, which is injected to improve separation of hydrocarbon fractions, condenses in the cooler regions of the column. Hydrogen sulfide and a number of other impurities tend to be present in this condensate, leading to the formation of various acids and heatstable salts. This sour water is a major source of corrosion in the top part of the tower and in condenser tubing. To fight corrosion, it is common to inject chemical inhibitors. Because corrosion is often blamed on the presence of acids, the response is to increase the ph by adding alkaline neutralizers. With the continuously varying composition of sour water however, these reagents are more often than not, dosed in excess. Despite the high chemicals expenditure it rarely is a remedy, as a significant cause of corrosion is alkaline sour water making the cure worse than the disease. Significant savings are made when the feed of reagents is controlled based on the ph value of sour water. Not only does maintaining the correct ph level result in a much lower rate of corrosion, it also significantly reduces the consumption of chemicals. To allow for continuous ph control, we provide very accurate ph analyzers using sensors that withstand the high sulfide environment and frequent hydrocarbon surges. ph electrode InPro 4800 i 8

9 Fluid Catalytic Cracking Product Quality Control Leads to Higher Profit Over 60 years old but still going strong, the FCC unit accepts a wide range of feedstocks and produces many different products. In-line measurement helps to maximize profitability. Control sour water ph Improved slurry oil quality Scrubber performance As with crude distilling, the fluid catalytic cracking unit also produces substantial quantities of sour water. This means that this plant also experiences corrosion problems. Frequently, heat-stable salts, which cause carbonate cracking, are the source. METTLER TOLEDO in-line analyzers help you to monitor and control the process ph to levels where corrosion is minimized. While gasoline is the main product of the FCC unit, a number of other fractions are obtained at the same time. Although the catalyst in the FCC process is continuously regenerated, catalyst fines end up in the fractionator column. These accumulate in the bottom stream in the slurry oil. To increase its value, the slurry oil is purified through filtration or clarification. In-line turbidity monitoring of the clarified oil ensures realtime quality control and warns of particle breakthrough. FCC regenerator flue gas contains SO 2, SO 3 and catalyst fines. Wet scrubbing systems are used to control the emission of these substances. In-line ph control ensures the lowest emission levels. An EasyClean automated cleaning and calibration system ensures the measurement sensor is always working efficiently

10 Alkylation Greater Safety in Hazardous Processes METTLER TOLEDO understands the difficulties of sulfuric acid and hydrofluoric acid alkylation, and provides analytical sensors that are durable and reliable. In alkylation processes, safety cannot be compromised. Only in-line analysis allows you to respond in time in the event of process upsets that could lead to accidents. Sulfuric acid alkylation Reliable measurement despite HF acid The effluent from the alkylation reaction contains traces of acid. If not removed, these cause corrosion and fouling downstream. Our inductive conductivity measurement systems help to control the caustic washing that eliminates them. ph control is vital in the subsequent water wash to avoid emulsions forming, which can result in carry-over of acid or caustic, leading to serious damage of the fractionation column. We use HF-resistant glass for our ph electrodes designed for hydrofluoric acid environments. Installed in the potassium hydroxide regenerator, sensors such as the InPro 4262 i ensure you can maintain the proper caustic ph in the HF scrubber and be sure of its efficiency. 11 Sour Water Stripper Efficient Stripping with ph Control Sour water is generated in many refinery processes. Typically, it contains hydrogen sulfide but hydrogen cyanide, ammonia, carbon dioxide, acids and phenols can also be present. ph control helps the sour water stripper to efficiently remove the gases so that the water may be safely re-used or exposed of. ph control in strippers Solid electrolyte, rugged performance As sour water is typically a mixture of dissolved acidic or basic gases, stripping it is not an easy process. Forcing high quantities of steam through sour water will remove certain gases but leaves others dissolved or bound as salts. ph is of direct influence on the phase equilibrium of dissolved gases and can shift the equilibrium towards the gas phase. As gases, these compounds are simply removed using less steam. With the abundance of poisoning substances it contains, sour water is one of the harshest media on ph electrodes. Xerolyt Extra sensors feature a solid polymer electrolyte which provides an excellent barrier against compounds that would quickly poison other probes. Instead of a diaphragm, sensors with Xerolyt Extra have an open junction, eliminating the risk of clogging. Combined, these features ensure high reliability and a long service life. 11

12 Claus Tail Gas Treatment Early Warning of Process Upsets To maximize sulfur recovery, the Claus process is often followed by a tail gas cleanup. In-line ph monitoring helps in protecting process equipment against corrosion. Although high sulfide concentrations make this one of the worst environments for measuring ph, METTLER TOLEDO electrodes are more than up to the challenge. ph in sulfur recovery Low maintenance Glass Measuring solution Open junction Xerolyt Extra solid polymer electrolyte Tail gas cleanup boosts the efficiency of the sulfur recovery unit to almost 100 %. When catalyst used in the reaction loses its activity, breakthrough of SO 2 may result. In the quench tower, this will manifest itself through a drop in quench water ph. In-line ph monitoring will warn of this event so that corrective measures can be taken and serious equipment corrosion avoided. Quench water typically has a high suspended solids concentration, which is problematic to most ph probes as it clogs the reference diaphragm. Our InPro 4260 Xerolyt Extra ph electrode is ideal for this application. The sensor s large, open reference junction means clogging is eliminated and therefore maintenance is significantly lower. 13 Amine Sweetening Energy Savings with Differential ph Measurement Amine treating consumes a lot of energy in the form of steam. METTLER TOLEDO appreciates the need for cost savings and is constantly searching for opportunities to help you increase efficiency. Reduced steam costs Dual-channel transmitter There is a direct correlation between the acid gas load on an amine solution and its ph. This means that the difference between the ph value of lean and rich amine in an amine sweetener tells you exactly what the acid gas load is. Knowing this, the amount of steam needed to regenerate the rich amine can be adapted: more steam when the acid gas load is high, less steam when it is low. We offer an extensive transmitter portfolio. The M700 dual-channel transmitter is perfect for use in the amine sweetener application as the ph of both the lean and the rich amine can be measured at the same time and even the differential value can be transmitted. The M700 is fully certified for hazardous area use, comes in a robust stainless steel housing and is available with multiple analog, Foundation Fieldbus or Profibus outputs. 13

14 Boiler Feedwater Risk of Boiler Failure Avoided with In-line Analysis The treatment of water for steam generation is extremely sophisticated and requires in-depth understanding of water chemistry. Although it is a clean medium, water is very difficult to analyze accurately. METTLER TOLEDO is an expert in ultrapure water analysis. Stable measurement despite low conductivity Oxygen under control Accurate TDS monitoring Most modern ph measurements use potentiometric sensors where the potential is measured against a reference electrode. As boiler feedwater has a very low dissolved solids concentration, it has virtually no electrical conductivity. This makes it very hard for the ph sensor to measure the difference in potential, often resulting in very unstable ph readings. Our prepressurized ph electrodes use their own electrolyte to create sufficient conductivity for flawless measurement. Corrosion is a complex problem with many reaction mechanisms involved. Dissolved oxygen boosts corrosion and increases the corrosivity of impurities such as chlorides. Our polarographic oxygen sensors accurately measure dissolved oxygen to levels as low as 1 ppb. Maintenance is easy thanks to smart and simple design, and takes no more than two minutes. Too high a dissolved solids content leads to scaling and loss of thermal efficiency. METTLER TOLEDO provides conductivity sensors designed for boiler water use that, thanks to integrated temperature compensation, measure total dissolved solids extremely accurately. 15 Cooling Water Three in One An Elegant Solution for Monitoring Cooling Water Whether you deal with corrosion, fouling or disinfection, inline analysis from METTLER TOLEDO helps you in managing your cooling water cycle effectively and ensures cooling capacity is maintained throughout the plant. Blowdown at the right time ph and ORP from one sensor Modular transmitter When cooling water evaporates, dissolved solids concentrate. At high temperatures, precipitation of these solids causes scaling, leading to reduced heat transfer and flow rates. Our conductivity sensors reliably detect the critical TDS level for triggering blowdown and feeding of fresh make-up water, thereby making certain the cooling water cycle remains clean and efficient. Cooling water ph needs to be carefully kept in control for several reasons. Too high a ph encourages scaling. Too low may adversely affect biocide activity, corrosion inhibitors, etc. The oxidation / reduction potential is the ideal parameter for controlling disinfection, with minimal use of biocides and without the use of extensive analyzer systems. METTLER TOLEDO ph probes measure ph and ORP in parallel and give you both values at the same time. Plug in one module for conductivity, and one for ph / ORP and you will get all three parameters from the same instrument. The multiparameter, multi-channel M700 transmitter can be configured as desired. However, the conductivity / ph / ORP set-up is the best solution for cooling water analysis. The M700 is fully compatible with our ISM platform and offers benefits that make maintenance simple: full diagnostics, and Plug and Measure with pre-calibrated sensors (see page 17)

Oxygen analysis is not only helpful in sustaining a safe atmosphere but also in controlling inert gas flow and for making savings in nitrogen use. Also, in vapor recovery systems oxygen analyzers have proven their value. The main advantage of our polarographic oxygen sensors is that they can be installed directly in the process. As they are insensitive to moisture, dust and most solvents, the need for sample conditioning is eliminated. This means that installation costs are minimal and also that risk of failure is reduced as weaker links are removed from the chain. Unlike other oxygen analyzers, METTLER TOLEDO polarographic oxygen sensors do not require costly calibration gases to maintain their accuracy. Calibration with air is all that it takes. In combination with our InTrac 777 retractable housings, the calibration routine is very easy: retract the sensor, purge air through the housing s integral flushing chamber and re-insert.
