Propane in Your Community Overview of Propane and Safety Measures

Propane Versatile and Reliable 60 million Americans safely use and rely on propane 90% of Restaurant use propane as a kitchen fuel supplies. Propane is a secure and reliable energy source

Propane Versatile and Reliable Residential Uses Home and water heating Cooking Standby electrical generation Grills, patio heaters, outdoor fireplaces Commercial/Industrial Uses Fuel for forklifts Space and water heating Construction and lawn maintenance equipment

Propane Versatile and Reliable Agricultural Uses Pest and weed control Crop drying Irrigation system power Transportation Uses School buses Commercial fleets (trucks, taxis, police cars) Most widely used alternative fuel

Propane Versatile and Reliable Clean and environmentally friendly fuel Propane appliances have lower greenhouse gas emissions than oil or electric appliances* Propane vehicles cut greenhouse gas emissions about 20% compared to similar vehicles that are fueled with gasoline or diesel fuel Propane-fueled appliances and vehicles reduce nitrogen oxide, carbon monoxide, particulate matter and hydrocarbon emissions compared to gasoline, diesel, and fuel oil options *When electricity is generated from fossil fuels

A Good Neighbor for You and the Environment Propane is non-toxic Does not produce below- or above-ground pollutants Does not contaminate soil or groundwater, unlike oil products such as diesel fuel, gasoline, or fuel oil Propane quickly dissipates in the air if leaked Propane and propane facilities do not disturb the natural environment

We Are Part of the shopping mall We are part of the Shopping Mall too. Our families and employees visit the Mall. We strive to be responsible stewards of the Shopping Mall and the Environment.

Safety Is Our Highest Priority Propane is a safe fuel when properly stored, handled, transported, and used We train for employees We offer continuing education courses for all employees Our training programs are frequently updated Stringent codes, standards, and regulations are always applied to all our installations

What Is a Propane Storage? The Storage facilities is the propane storage area for the mall Three common elements to every storage Storage tanks (size will vary depending on needs) Regulator Station Filling truck parking

Propane Storage Facility Safety Mall Storage facilities have an excellent safety record Rigorous employee training programs Implementation of industry-based practices and procedures State and federal regulations and standards Regular inspection programs Quality procedures for filling cylinders. Quality issues to be addressed when new equipment is installed at mall customer. Quality issues when using propane as an boiler fuel Procedures for responding to a customer who claims to have a problem with the quality of their propane. Procedures for investigating a possible problem with propane quality.

Shopping Mall Propane Storage Facility Safety Our Shopping Malls propane storage facilities have installed emergency system that immediately stops the flow of propane in case of a seismic movement. Also we have many safety programs to help ensure the safety of the general public and employees.

A Good Neighbor for You and the Environment The Mall propane storage facilities are neat and clean The Propane storage facilities do not emit odors The propane storage facilities do not produce any noise. Empresas de Gas is always responsible for the inspection and maintenance of the LPG system.

SAFETY IS OUR PRIORITY Safety tips for Shopping Malls

SAFETY TIPS FOR THE MALL AND THE COMMUNITY WHAT SHOULD I DO IF I SMELL GAS? NO FLAMES OR SPARKS! Immediately put out all smoking materials and other open flames. Do not operate lights, appliances, telephones, or cell phones. Flames or sparks from these sources can trigger an explosion or a fire. LEAVE THE AREA IMMEDIATELY! Get everyone out of the building or area where you suspect gas is leaking. SHUT OFF THE GAS. Turn off the main gas supply valve on your propane tank if it is safe to do so. To close the valve, turn it to the right (clockwise). REPORT THE LEAK. From a neighbor s home or other nearby building away from the gas leak, call your propane retailer right away. If you can t reach your propane retailer, call 911 or your local fire department. DO NOT RETURN TO THE BUILDING OR AREA until your propane retailer determines that it is safe to do so. GET YOUR SYSTEM CHECKED. Before you attempt to use any of your propane appliances, your propane retailer or a qualified service technician must check your entire system to ensure that it is leak-free.

SAFETY TIPS HOW TO RECOGNIZE THE SMELL OF PROPANE Propane has a strong, unpleasant smell like rotten eggs, a skunk s spray, or a dead animal. Propane manufacturers add the smell deliberately to help alert customers to propane leaks, which can create a safety hazard. TAKE THE SNIFF TEST. Teach everyone in your home or building what propane smells like. You can use the blue circle on the page opposite of the inside front cover. Or, ask Empresas de Gas for a demonstration. CAN YOU SMELL IT? It may be hard for some people to smell propane for the following reasons: They have a cold, allergies, sinus congestion, or another medical condition. Their sense of smell is reduced due to use of tobacco, alcohol, or drugs. Tobacco smoke, cooking odors, and other strong odors can mask the smell of propane. As people age, their sense of smell can become less sensitive. If the smell of propane is present in the air over a period of time, odor fatigue can occur. The nose gets tired, and a person no longer smells the propane odor. The propane smell may not be strong enough to wake up someone who is sleeping. The propane smell may be in a location (basement or attic) where it is not detected by people in other areas of the building. A phenomenon called odor fade can occur an unintended reduction in the concentration of the odor of propane.
