2 DP UltraMulti The DP UltraMulti is an enhanced core product in DP s extensive product range. It is an Ultra High Pressure, High Temperature boiler that is designed to combust multiple fuel types to extremely high efficiencies. The existing HPHT standards can efficiently combust soft or hard fuel types but this can be further enhanced by additional pressure parameters. The development of the UltraMulti is based on an identified client need for even higher productivity from biomass combustion, particularly for plants which are using multiple fuel types, poor or variable quality fuels. The calorific value of fuels with such characteristics is not high and therefore even small efficiency gains can reap financial benefits that are significant enough to make a difference to ROI. The UltraMulti is able to handle fuels with moisture levels up to 50%, depending on fuel type. The combustion system and other related plant equipment have been modified in line with the demands of the higher pressure parameters. Efficiency is also affected by corrosion and slagging, and the potential problems in these areas have also been identified and addressed at the outset. Additional options which can further improve plant efficiency have also been developed. These include innovative fuel handling and feeding equipment, grate adjustments and ash handling designs; and integrated fuel emission controls. To optimise plant performance, the use of fuzzy automation enhancements can reduce performance variability and manpower costs. The UltraMulti is an upgraded core product that has been designed to the same reliable, guaranteed performance standards as other DP boilers but delivers an additional productivity boost which can potentially reduce project ROI. Plant efficiencies can be improved by ~2-3%, reducing ROI by up to 2 years. Annual fuel costs can be reduced by 7-10%, reducing overall operating costs. NOx emissions are largely derived from fuel, and DP s LowNox technology to minimise NOx from fuel is already a standard function of DP products. It has enabled previous NOx and SOx standards of mg/m 3 to be met without additional equipment. Today, increasingly stringent emissions standards require the addition of a Selective Non Catalytic Reactor (SNCR) or SCR (Selective Catalytic Reactor). Both require effective integration with the boiler to ensure efficiencies are not reduced. DP designs all solutions starting with a deep understanding of the fuel characteristics from its shape and size, to its chemical properties. Understanding fuel characteristics is a key component of managing emissions from fuel as well as optimising combustion. Research & Development The DP UltraMulti is based on the proven design of the 130tph (30MW) high temperature high pressure biomass boiler solution. This advanced HPHT biomass direct combustion technology was developed in Denmark and has been successfully used in more than 50 power plants in China. The DP UltraMulti increases the pressure parameters and with the addition of a corresponding Ultra High Pressure turbine, raises the efficiency levels even further. The parameters have been defined by many years of operating experience and extensive operational data. This, together with fuel data from over 65 fuel types found in DP s proprietary BiomassLab database, are major inputs to our research and development. Improving the performance of our products for an ever increasing range of fuel types is essential to meet the demands of our clients and the opportunities in the biomass industry. DP s Global Engineering Services platform brings together engineering knowledge and design expertise, enabling our specialists to share best practice.
