2 PUBLIC EXPECTATIONS: WORLD CLIMATE SUMMIT. Global warming threshold well below 2 C, even aiming for 1.5 C compared to preindustrial levels! EU target: 40 % reduction of GHG emissions by 2030 from 1990 level. Breakdown of targets for all relevant sectors in upcoming months. Transport sector must reduce GHG emissions substantially. Substantial drop of GHG emissions by 2030 required to comply with 2015 World Climate Summit targets. Page 2

3 CHALLENGES FOR OEMs. To develop the one world car technology would be most favorable, however Customers expect solutions for their individual needs Differing world regions require different solutions. Governments set country specific regulation for emission reduction. The BMW Group has to develop a wide set of technologies that becomes more and more diverse. Page 3

4 HYDROGEN: FUEL FOR THE NEXT 100 YEARS? CUSTOMER EXPECTATIONS. What customers tell us they want: *) Exciting vehicle design and concept. Vehicle size, loading space, comfort, driving dynamics same as conventional vehicles. Driving range and refueling time at today`s level. Acceptable add-on pricing for zero emission technology: approximately 10 %. No well to wheel emissions (CO 2 and other exhaust pollutants). But how to assure it to our customers? *) Source: BMW market research Customers expect zero emission vehicles with similar or better qualities to today s vehicles at minimal extra cost. Page 4

Renewable Energy Hydrogen Energy System Fueling FCEV Customers Zero Emission Long Distance Driving Challenges : Continue renewable power build up Realize hydrogen production, storage and distribution Economically viable business model Extend network and improve operational availability Establish supplier base, increase production volume and reduce cost Increase customer demand by competitive total cost of ownership or unique advantages The success of hydrogen mobility depends on the economical viability of each single business sector in the chain. Energy market for surplus power will emerge. Technologies with highest value added will dominate usage and market price. Hydrogen can play a role to store renewable energy and to provide fuel for FCEVs. Estimations show that hydrogen from surplus power can play a substantial role to provide fuel for FCEVs. Page 7

10 REMAINING TASKS FOR TECHNOLOGY BREAKTHROUGH. Political challenges: Practical de-carbonization strategy based on 2015 Paris Summit targets. Framework that encourages transition to a renewable energy system including hydrogen. No taxation/fees on electricity for electrolyzers. ( EEG Umlage in Germany) Mechanisms that make customers choose zero emission vehicles and drive market demand. To offer and guarantee to the customer a no well to wheel emissions mobility solution. Other technical challenges remain for a technology breakthrough in Cost reduction of components and systems. Market and supply chain development to automotive standards. Sufficient and reliable hydrogen refueling infrastructure. A guaranteed green hydrogen chain is a prerequisite for a successful take-off of the FCEV technology.
