2 Dear Parents and Guardians, This educational activity book was designed to help children learn to appreciate our natural resources and encourage their participation in conservation efforts. What Parents and Guardians Can Do to Help: Read the educational activity book with your child. Ask your child a question about the information contained in the educational activity book. Participate in an educational activity. Teach and lead by example. Your child learns by watching and doing. So set a good example. Be a positive role model. Your values will encourage your child to care about our environment. Through the planned reduction of solid waste and conservation of our own natural resources, you will help create an environment with improved air and water quality. You will contribute to make our Pasco community a healthier place in which to learn and live. Do All You Can: Remember the three R s : Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Choose recyclable products and products made of recycled material. Conserve water and electricity. Fight pollution. Walk or cycle whenever you can. Use compost for fertilizer. Plant trees and a garden. Never litter. 3 Sam was getting ready for school. He was eating and drinking milk. He placed the empty milk container in the blue bag at his house. It made Sam because he knew he was helping the environment! Shortly after, Sam arrived at. He thought about all of the items that his school was. In his class they recycled & At lunch the students recycled plastic, juice and milk, and foam. Sam s school has an Earth Patrol group of students that plant gardens, conserve energy by shutting off and and by cleaning up litter around the. The moral of the story is: be more like Sam, conserve your natural resources! It will make you! Recycle for Tomorrow's Future!

5 Did you know you can recycle #1 and #2 plastics, aluminum cans, steel cans, and clear, brown, and green glass? All you have to do is place the recyclables in a blue bag. Blue bags can be found at area grocery and retail stores. Color the pictures of the items you can put in your blue bag and help to Curb Your Blues! Once you place your blue bag at the curb on your scheduled day, the recycling truck will pick it up and bring it to the Material Recovery Facility to be recycled.

6 A leaky faucet wastes our water; fix leaky faucets as soon as possible. Conserve water and energy! Only run the dishwasher when it is full. Don t water your lawn when it is raining, it is best to water in the early morning! It s shower time! To help conserve water, keep your shower time less than 5 minutes and install a low volume shower head. Be sure to adjust the water setting on your washing machine to the correct level. Don t leave the water running while brushing your teeth! Don t be a drip! Save our water.

7 Did you know? Oil gives us plastic. Recycled plastic can be made into fabric, plastic lumber, carpet, & more. What can YOU do? YOU can make a difference by recycling every day at home and at school. START Start recycling today and find your way to the recycling center! Tires, Tires, Everywhere Recycled tires can be made into mulch. Did you know? Trees give us paper. Recycled paper can be made into cereal boxes, tissue boxes, newspaper, & more.

8 It is taken to the recycling center and separated and put into bales, which are bundles of aluminum tied with wire. The cans are shredded or crushed and their coating and outside decorations are burned off. Then the small size pieces of cans are loaded into melting furnaces, where the material is blended with new aluminum. The metal is coiled and shipped to can makers, who produce can bodies and lids. They are delivered to beverage companies and filled. How many items can you list that are made with aluminum? 10 Sometimes trying to get outside can seem like a maze - especially when you have to make sure that everything is turned OFF before you go! It s very important to turn off lights, TVs, computers, fans, and electrical appliances when they are not in use and when you re leaving home. A little effort can save a lot of energy! Test your eye-hand coordination. Please turn off all of the electrical items in the maze! The amount of energy you use may shock you.

11 At the Materials Recovery Facility, the materials are sorted, baled, and sold to markets to be made into new products. Recycling conserves trees, water and other natural resources by reducing what people throw away, and it returns valuable material to the industry for reuse. Plastic bottles are made into patio furniture and fabric; aluminum cans are recycled into a new can. Steel cans are recycled into car parts. Glass is recycled into new glass. 12 Recycling is important because it helps to protect the environment. Pasco County Schools recycle over 1,800 tons of materials each year. Our schools recycle all of the items listed below. 15 If you don t have curbside service at your home, and live in an apartment or condo, you can visit one of the drop-off sites to bring your recyclable items. You can recycle newspaper at the drop-off locations too. Just look for these big blue recycling containers and stop by to recycle today! Visit to find your nearest location! Click on Departments; then click on the Recycling & Education link to learn more. The trash in Pasco County is burned at the Waste-To-Energy (WTE) facility. All the garbage trucks empty the garbage onto the floor; then, a big claw comes down and picks up the garbage to be put into the boiler where a hot fire is burning. The facility burns on average 1,050 tons of trash per day; 7 days a week; 24 hours a day. Solid Waste is converted into energy; enough electricity is made every hour to power 25,000 homes!
