Year after year we continue to re-evaluate the market and assess areas where we can see potential improvements. With this in mind, and the ever increasing demands for energy efficiency, we have increased our range of TRR certified windows even further - offering greater choice with even more benefits to our customers. With the introduction of the new 5 chamber Total 70 system and even more advanced glazing options we are pleased to announce the introduction of A* and A+ ratings to our existing range. In addition to this we are now in a position to offer the highest performing U value system to date - set at an impressive 0.8 over all U Value. By utilising the very latest in profiles, glazing, spacer bar and thermal technologies our new range is designed to give you the flexibility to meet even the most demanding of customers needs. Background Housing is one of the major sources of energy use, and one of the main areas of energy loss is via the glazing. Windows are in place for a long time and efficiency gains achieved by fitting high performance windows are effective for the life of the product. By increasing the energy efficiency of glazed areas this will significantly reduce fuel bills, improve comfort and reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the life of the window installation. Building Regulations Since October 2010 the WER index for windows is now included in Building Regulations under Part L. Beside the existing target U values for replacement windows, compliance to Part L1B can be shown using certain Window Energy Ratings. As of 2010 the standard for replacement windows in an existing dwelling should be an energy rating of C or better with the standard for new windows in extensions also being a C rating or better. For new dwellings the compliance with Part L is proven via a Target CO 2 Emission Rate, which needs to be met, without specific WER requirements for the windows.

4 Your Guide to Energy Ratings We understand that our customers don t always have time to worry if the products they install meet current regulations. Sun employ specially trained in-house experts to offer comprehensive technical and sales advice, all supported with the necessary documentation, required by Building Control, in a handy PDF format. Below are some of the key terms that play a key role in the performance of modern day windows and doors. U Value A U value is a measure of heat loss. It is expressed in W/m2k, and shows the amount of heat lost in watts (W) per square metre of material. In windows there are two U values to consider, the U value of the insulated glass unit and the over all U value of the product including frame. A lower U Value is often desired for domestic installations given the lower the value the higher the amount of heat retained. G Value G value is the co-efficient commonly used in Europe to measure the solar energy transmittance of glass - also known as Solar Factor. The G value is the defining factor behind energy ratings, the higher the G value the more solar radiation is allowed to transfer in to the property. A high G Value is often desired for domestic installations as it provides effectively free heat. Heat Reflection Reflection is the opposite of absorption. Instead of being absorbed, some of the heat energy is bounced, or reflected off, in the opposite direction. A high heat reflection value would result in a cooler internal temperature, where as a low heat reflection value would result in a higher internal temperature. Light Transmission The light transmission of a unit defines the amount of visible light allowed to pass through to the property. A high light transmission value is traditionally more desirable for domestic installations, brightening the home, where as some commercial installations may require a lower light transmission value to limit screen glare.
