5 Organisation Overview- Public Works Department (PWD) Consist of 5 Divisions, (i)administration (ii)civil & Road Construction (iii)mechanical & Heavy Machinery (iv)building & Engineering and (v) Water Supply & IWRM. PWD core functions; Revenue collection for Quarry (sales of aggregates)and Heavy Machineries Provides services for Port Operations, Road Maintenances, Building Permit, Inspections & Engineering and Water Supply Maintenances & Operations National Focal Point to SOPAC Div of SPC, PWWA, NZ Hydrology Society, WMO Hydrology, NZ Standards

8 Sector Main Challenges Majority of the reticulate Pipelines are 30 t0 40 years old require replacement Bulk water Meters and Data Loggers now failure require replacements(existing starting to play up-incorrect readings) Electrical Control Boxes-Parts are phase out on the market Economic Development in Tourism increased Water usage and Wastewater Wastewater (Sanitation) lack of maintenances programs Funding mechanism (Address other national Priorities)

9 Current Water Projects GEF IWRM National Demonstration Project- ( )- Integrate Land Use, Water Supply and Waste Management as protection Measures for Alofi underground freshwater catchment and near shore fisheries GEF PACC National Demonstration Project ( ) Adaptation to Climate Change in Water Resource through rainwater catchments NZAID Assets Management- ( ) Assets Replacements & Maintenances Sopac- Drinking Water Safety Plan and Water Quality EU EDF 10 - Renewable Energy Pumps level control cables

10 Water Reservoir Replacement Project Project: Water Reservoir Replacement Total Funding: $330, ( $260K NZAid AM, $20k Sopac, IWRM $30k and $10 GoN) Objective: Safe Drinking Water Storage for the Communities and Reduce Water Loss. Outcome: (i) Replaced 4 leaking tanks with new ones by install 5 new water tank and 1 for new community area (ii) reduce water loss in water tanks Contractor- Tasman Tank Ltd of Australia, Supplier and Installation including PWD Water Sector Tank Type- Coated Galvanised Steel with a liner (Construct to NZ&A Standards, Cyclone rate and seismic load) Duration: Sept 11-May 2012.
