3 1 General Description The online Comfort and Weather Analysis tool has been designed to help the user generate thermal comfort and outdoor weather analysis for Indian cities. The tool efficiently produces the following information: The Comfort and Weather Tool helps the user analyse thermal comfort and outdoor weather for Indian cities. The tool uses weather data from Energy Plus weather files (TMY3) for analysis. With the help of ASHRAE 55 formula (Comfort Temperature = 0.33*monthly outdoor temperature mean C) and Energy Plus weather files, the adaptive comfort zone for the city selected by the user. This tool also develops the weather chart which shows the temperature distribution on 24 x 7 basis and also daytime basis for the city selected by the user. The humidity distribution in for 24 x 7 spaces and daytime spaces for the user selected city is also shown. The Centre for Advanced Research in Building Science and Energy (CARBSE) at CEPT University has developed this tool. The project has been co-funded by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India and Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation (SSEF), New Delhi, India. This document provides a simple guide to the tool and its functions.just simply click onto begin your calculation. 1.1 Importance of the tool Climate has an influence on the thermal sensation and preferences of people and on the design of the buildings they inhabit. There has been a growing interest among architects and building contractors to make buildings that are responsive to climate and the thermal comfort requirements of the building users. With the help of this tool, architect and designers will be able to understand comfort and weather characteristics of a place before designing a building. 2 Key Concepts This tool is based on two key concepts- An analysis of weather and an analysis of comfort. 2.1 Comfort analysis The comfort analysis includes three types of graphs based on the Adaptive Thermal Comfort Model (ASHRAE 2010) : Adaptive comfort zone: Annual Adaptive comfort zone for 24 hour spaces- Monthly Adaptive comfort zone for daytime spaces - Monthly The graphs shows the typical annual ASHRAE 55 operative temperature comfort bands for naturally ventilated spaces in the chosen city. The comfortable zone (t n ) is derived from the following ASHRAE 55 formula: Centre for Advance Research in Building Science and Energy, CEPT University. 3of 5
4 t n =0.33*t pma (out) Where t n =comfort zone temperature, in degree Celsius ( C); t pma (out) =prevailing mean outdoor air temperature, in degree Celsius ( C). The consecutive zone i.e.: Warm zone & Cold zone are derived after offsetting the comfortable zone to 80% and -80%, based on guidance given in the ASHRAE 55 Standard (ASHRAE 2010). The last two zones i.e. Too hot and too cold are derived after offsetting the comfortable zone to 90% and -90%. The prevailing mean outdoor temperature is calculated as follows: Step 1. Calculate min and max temperature for each day Step 2. Arithmetic mean of the two provides average temperature for a day Step 3. Arithmetic mean of daily average temperatures (calculated above) in the month The weather data temperature is then also analysed for Adaptive comfort zone for 24 hour spaces- Monthly". Similarly it is also analysed for" Adaptive comfort zone for daytime spaces - Monthly".Daytime hours range from 9 am to 6 pm 2.2 Weather analysis The Weather Analysis is presented through eight types of graphs: Temperature distribution for 24 hour spaces Temperature distribution for daytime spaces Humidity distribution for 24 hour spaces Humidity distribution for daytime spaces Estimated operation modes for 24 hour spaces- annual Estimated operation modes for daytime spaces-annual Estimated operation modes for 24 hour spaces- monthly Estimated operation modes for daytime spaces- monthly These graphs are generated from EnergyPlusEnergy Simulation software that contains weather files obtained from ISHRAE data set 1 and IWEC data set (ASHRAE 2001).Temperature data is used to plot temperature distribution for 24 hour spaces as well as daytime spaces in a selected city.similarly humidity data is presented.based on the outdoor temperature and 1 Developed for use with building energy performance simulation programs, this set of 58 locations in India was created by the Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ISHRAE) in TMY2 format. ISHRAE has kindly allowed DOE to make these data available to EnergyPlus users. The ISHRAE weather data are 2005 Indian Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, New Delhi, India Centre for Advance Research in Building Science and Energy, CEPT University. 4of 5
5 humidity level, estimated operation modes for 24 hours spaces and daytime spaces (Annually and Monthly) has been plotted. These operation modes are: Heating, Natural ventilation, Dehumidification, Mild cooling, Cooling, Cooling and Dehumidification. 3 Disclaimer This document was prepared by CARBSE, CEPT University, as an account of work funded by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), Government of India and Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation (SSEF).
