1 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report City South Daytona 2011 We are pleased to present to you this year's Annual Water Quality Report. This report is designed to inform you about the quality water we deliver to you every day. Our goal is to provide you with a pleasant, safe and dependable supply. We want you to understand the efforts we make to continually improve the water treatment process and protect our water resources. Our water is purchased from the City Daytona Beach, which comes from a series 26 deep wells (>200 ft. deep) that tap into the Floridan Aquifer. This is a vast underground water source that stretches from South Carolina to include the State Florida. Although this water is very high in quality it does contain dissolved minerals and natural organics, which need to be monitored and treated. The water is treated at the Ralph Brennan Plant, located in Daytona Beach, through ozonation, stening, filtration, and processes. An inhibitor is added to reduce corrosion your household plumbing, and the naturally occurring fluoride content is supplemented at a level recommended by the American Dental Health Association. We're proud to report that your meets or exceeds all Federal and State requirements. As with all, we have learned through our monitoring and testing that some constituents have been detected. The EPA has determined that your water IS SAFE at these levels. The Cities South Daytona and Daytona Beach routinely monitor for over 80 primary and secondary contaminants in your according to Federal and State laws, rules and regulations throughout the year. The primary contaminants include compounds (mostly metals), volatile compounds, pesticides, PCBs, and radionuclides. Secondary contaminants include compounds associated with the aesthetic quality water. Except where indicated otherwise, this report is based on the results our monitoring for the period January 1 to December 31, Data obtained before January 1, 2011 and presented in this report are from the most recent testing done in accordance with laws, rules and regulations. Those contaminants listed in the tables that follow are the only contaminants detected in your. If you have any questions about this report or concerning your water utility, please contact Les Gillis, Public Works Director at We want our valued customers to be informed about their water utility. It is possible that lead levels at your home may be higher than at other homes in the community as a result materials used in your home s plumbing. If you are concerned about lead levels in your home s water, you may wish to have your water tested and flush your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using tap water. Additional information is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) Microbiological Contaminants Contaminant Total Coliform Bacteria Highest Monthly Number Positive Samples G Likely source 01/1- N 1 0 For systems that collect <40 samples per month: 1 positive monthly sample Naturally present in the environment Important Information: One positive sample occurred during the month April and the month October. The Total Coliform Rule requires water systems to meet a strict limit for coliform bacteria. Coliform bacteria are usually harmless, but their presence in water can be an indication disease-causing bacteria. When coliform bacteria are found, special follow-up tests are done to determine if harmful bacteria are present in the water supply. If this limit is exceeded, the water supplier must notify the public via newspaper, television, and/or radio. In these tables you will find many terms and abbreviations you might not be familiar with. To help you better understand these terms we have provided the following definitions: Parts per million (ppm) or Milligrams per liter (mg/l) - one part per million corresponds to one minute in two years or a single penny in $10,000. Parts per billion or Micrograms per liter - one part per billion corresponds to one minute in 2,000 years, or a single penny in $10,000,000. Action (AL) - the concentration a contaminant which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements which a water system must follow. Maximum Contaminant - The "Maximum Allowed" () is the highest level a contaminant that is allowed in. s are set as close to the Gs as feasible using the best available treatment technology. Maximum Contaminant Goal - The Goal (G) is the level a contaminant in below which there is no known or expected risk to health. Gs allow for a margin safety. Maximum Residual Disinfectant (MRDL): The highest level a disinfectant allowed in. There is convincing evidence that addition disinfectant is necessary for control microbial contaminants. Maximum Residual Disinfectant Goal (MRDLG): The level a disinfectant below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs do not reflect the benefits the use disinfectants to control microbial contaminants. Non-Detects (ND) - Laboratory Analysis indicates that the constituents are not present. N/A- not applicable.

4 *Total Trihalomethanes (TTHM) Some people who drink water containing trihalomethanes in excess the over many years may experience problems with their liver, kidneys, or central nervous system, and may have an increased risk getting cancer. **Haloacetic Acids (HAA5) Some people who drink water containing haloacetic acids in excess the over many years may have an increased risk getting cancer. In 2011 the Department Environmental Protection performed a Source Water Assessment on the Daytona Beach system. The assessment was conducted to provide information about any potential sources contamination in the vicinity their wells, identifying thirty-seven potential sources contamination. The susceptibility levels are rated from Low to Moderate. The assessment results are available on the FDEP Source Water Assessment and Protection Program website at or from the Public Works Department at (386) Additional Information The sources (both tap water and bottled water) include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs, and wells. As water travels over the surface the land or through the ground it dissolves naturally occurring minerals and in some cases, radioactive material, and can pick up substances resulting from the presence animals or from human activity. Contaminants that may be present in source water include: Microbial contaminants - such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations, and wildlife. Inorganic contaminants - such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban stormwater runf, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining or farming. Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety sources such as agriculture, urban stormwater runf, and residential uses. Organic chemical contaminants - including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are byproducts industrial processes and petroleum production and also, can come from gas stations, urban stormwater runf and septic systems. Radioactive contaminants - which can be naturally-occurring or be the result oil and gas production and mining activities. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. FDA regulations establish limits for contaminants in bottled water which must provide the same protection for public health. Drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts some contaminants. The presence contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and the potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agency s Safe Drinking Water Hotline at , or the Volusia County Health Dept, Environmental Health Engineering at s are set at very stringent levels. To understand the possible health effects described for many regulated constituents, a person would have to drink 2 liters water every day at the level for a lifetime to have a one-in-a-million chance having the described health effect.

5 IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR YOU TO KNOW HEALTH ADVISORY: Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in than the general population. Immuno-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk infection by cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline ( ).
