1 Luxury Net-Zero Home by Rockwood Custom Homes 47 Grandview Place, Calgary AB T3Z A8 by Grant Bremner A Net-Zero Emissions (NZE) home is carbon neutral where carbon credits fully offset emissions. An NZE 1 has low-carbon design and technologies, and runs mainly on renewable power, often producing as much electricity as it consumes. Rockwood designed this luxury home in Springbank to be NZE, a first for Calgary. Achieving NZE, this innovative design combines transitional aesthetics with quality construction. This leading home has excellent energy performance with efficient gas and electricity consumption. This family home has a comfortable interior climate while minimizing active heating and air conditioning systems. With Passivhaus-consistent design and construction, heating energy consumption is one fifth of a conventional home. State-of-the-art programmable Nest learning thermostats conserve energy enabling online management of the climate from smartphones. Rockwood applied passive solar design principles. The house heats naturally on clear winter days with south-facing window placement plus a thermal heat mass in the basement. It is superinsulated and airtight with triple-glazing, energy efficient heating, and HRV systems: Superior insulation: 8 to 16 thick walls and high R-value ceilings, walls and doors. Spider insulation throughout all exterior walls (R-3+) and ceilings (R-55). To achieve airtightness in essential areas, closed-cell spray polyurethane foam (SPF) was used sparingly. Airtight construction: vapour barrier sealed plus controlled ventilation systems. Blower door test conducted during construction to locate and seal air leaks in the building envelop. Superior windows: Triple-glazed, Argon-filled, Lo-E EnergyStar windows reduce energy consumption and heating costs. Remote control of upper vaulted windows. Energy efficient heating: Hi-Velocity gas heating air delivery system, plus hydronic in-floor heating combined with high-end heat recovery ventilation (HRV) offer best of both worlds (i.e. passive and active). Hi-Velocity has an EnergySmart motor with a variable frequency drive. Heat recovery & ventilation: The HRV system substitutes for the passive systems in extreme weather to increase heat on colder winter days. In winter, the HRV pre-heats incoming cold air to reduce energy consumption and heating costs. Bathroom fans interlock with HRV. In summer, the HRV system and basement windows draw in naturally cool air from beneath the shaded deck and circulate throughout the house and out through upper vaulted windows. A high efficiency modulating/condensing Bosch boiler generates heat, piped throughout house from an indirect-fired Bradford & White highly insulated hot water storage tank. A programmable recirculation pump pre-circulates water throughout the home during usage hours. Active daylighting, EnergyStar appliances and efficient LED lighting significantly reduce electricity consumption. Motion sensors turn lights off after people leave rooms. A passive wine cellar in the basement naturally maintains the room at a constant cool temperature with sufficient humidity. The home is pre-wired for a future 8kW solar PV array which will generate most electricity on-site, and export surplus power to the grid offsetting electricity emissions. Future tree planting on the two acre lot will offset remaining lifetime carbon emissions. 1 In the EU, NZE stands for Nearly Zero Energy, and in California the idea is known as ZNE (for Zero Net Energy). All new homes in the EU and in California must meet the NZE or ZNE standards by 22. Energy and emissions aims are interrelated refer architecture23.org
