New dealers who have not had any installation experience. Dealers, who do not have any formal training, but have installed or worked on alternative energy systems. Experienced dealers who wish to expand their knowledge base. Support staff who wish to become more knowledgeable about the industry. Licensed electricians and those with a strong electrical knowledge base will benefit most from the course being offered. Instructor Bio Eric Smiley Eric received a Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University in His undergraduate thesis project was to re-commission a 5kW Wind generator at the Brace Research Station. Following graduation, Eric spent 6 years working with Energy Alternatives doing smallscale renewable energy system design, installation and sales. He has experience designing and installing micro-hydro, solar electric, wind electric and solar thermal systems across Canada. Eric s original course, Introduction to Photovoltaics was offered through the Electrical and Electronics Department of BCIT (British Columbia Institute of Technology) He developed the course for professionals and trades people interested in the principles and design of solar electric systems. He has further streamlined and enhanced his course for this Seminar. He was also elected to the Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) Board of Directors (PV division). 2 Page 2 of 5 Course Description: Introduction to Renewable Energy System equipment, such as photovoltaic modules, wind turbines, microhydro turbines, batteries, inverters and charge controllers. Participants are taught to identify the various components and interpret manufacturer's specifications. The design principles of stand-alone Renewable Energy systems are covered in detail as well as the requirements of the Canadian Electrical Code. Maintenance of stand-alone Renewable Energy systems is described. Course Topics Introduction and Overview of Course Site Assessment (Solar Resource and Energy Requirements) Photovoltaic Modules and PV Array Design BOS (Balance of System) components and BOS Design (Battery, Inverter and Controller) Site Assessment (Wind Resource) Wind Turbines and Wind System Design Site Assessment (Hydro Resource) Micro Hydro Turbines and Micro Hydro System Design Renewable Energy Systems and the Canadian Electrical Code Photovoltaic System Maintenance Photovoltaic Systems and the Canadian Electrical Code (continued) Course Goals: Assess the solar resource of a potential Renewable Energy system site. Assess the wind resource at a potential Renewable Energy system site. Assess the hydro resource at a potential Renewable Energy system site. Explain the function and operating characteristics of each system component. Interpret performance data for each Renewable Energy system component. Identify the different types of Renewable Energy systems. Specify the main components of an off-grid Renewable Energy system. Select disconnects; over-current protection, wire and grounding for a PV System. Refer to and interpret sections of the CEC applicable to PV systems. Perform basic Renewable Energy system maintenance. Course Learning Outcomes / Competencies At the end of the course the student will be able to: 1. Renewable Energy Power systems 1.1. Outline the advantages and disadvantages of Renewable Energy electric power generation Illustrate various Renewable Energy system configurations. 2. Fundamentals of photovoltaic power generation 2.1. Explain the main properties of sunlight essential to PV system design Perform a solar resource assessment of a potential site Identify the different PV cell and module technologies used today Interpret performance data and specifications for different PV modules. 3. Fundamentals of wind power generation 3.1. Assess the wind resource of a potential site 3.2. Identify different wind turbine technologies Identify different wind turbine tower configurations and analyze their merits Interpret performance data and specifications of different wind turbines. 4. Fundamentals of micro-hydro power generation 4.1. Assess the hydro resource of a potential site.

Balance of System (BOS) components 5.1. Interpret performance data and specifications for various types of Inverters Interpret performance data and specifications for various types of Batteries Interpret performance data and specifications for various types of charge controllers Choose appropriate mechanical and structural components for PV, wind and hydro systems. 6. Renewable Energy System Design Stand Alone 6.1. Specify the major components of stand-alone solar PV systems 6.2. Specify wind turbines and towers to match the Site Assessment Specify micro-hydro turbines, intakes and penstocks to match the Site Assessment Select and modify packaged systems to meet the requirements of the Site Assessment. 7. Safety and Maintenance 7.1. Identify key parts of the electrical code that apply to solar PV systems Illustrate proper placement and selection of electrical equipment in a PV system Illustrate proper wire selection for PV systems Illustrate proper bonding and grounding methods in a PV system Analyze the performance of a Renewable Energy system for maintenance and trouble shooting.
