4 Earths Sphere Atmosphere is the gaseous deep interior of the planet to the sand on beaches and peaks ofpor4on of the Earth that extends into space. Biosphere is the worldwide sum of all Ecosystems (plant and animal life. Hydrosphere is the sum of all water on the planet i.e. ocean, lakes, streams, and underground aquifers Geosphere (Lithosphere) includes the rocks and minerals on Earth from the molten rock and heavy metals in the mountains.

6 Biosphere The biosphere is the life zone of the Earth, and includes all living organisms (including humans), and all organic mauer that has not yet decomposed. The biosphere is structured into a hierarchy known as the food chain (all life is dependent on the first 4er mainly the primary producers that are capable of photosynthesis). Energy and mass is transferred from one level of the food chain to the next.

7 Atmosphere The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air, which we call the atmosphere. The atmosphere consists of four unique layers (the troposphere, the stratosphere,the mesosphere, and the thermosphere). The atmosphere reaches over 560 kilometers (348 miles) up from the surface of the Earth. The atmosphere is primarily composed of nitrogen (about 78%) and oxygen (about 21%) which is con4nuously cycled between plants and animals

8 Geosphere The geosphere is the solid Earth that includes the con4nental and ocean crust as well the various layers of Earth s interior. 94% of the Earth is composed of the elements oxygen, silicon, and magnesium. The geosphere is not sta4c (unchanging), but its surface (crust) is in a constant state of mo4on. Mineral resources are mined from the geosphere.

9 Hydrosphere The hydrosphere contains all the liquid water found on our planet. Water found on the surface of our planet includes the ocean as well as water from lakes and rivers, streams, and creeks. Water found under the surface of our planet includes water trapped in the soil and groundwater. Water found in our atmosphere includes water vapor.

10 Example of Sphere Interac4ons Humans (biosphere) built a dam out of rock materials (geosphere). Water in the lake (hydrosphere) seeps into the cliff walls behind the dam, becoming groundwater (geosphere), or evapora4ng into the air (atmosphere). Humans (biosphere) harness energy from the water (hydrosphere) by having it spin turbines (geosphere, because the turbines come from metal ores in the ground) to produce electricity.

11 How are Earth s Spheres Interac4ng? What sphere interac4ons can you infer from this photograph? When you identfy sphere interac4ons, think of one feature in the image at a 4me, decide which sphere it is a part of, then consider how it interacts with the other spheres. With a partner, describe interac4ons in this scene, tracing the movement of materials or energy through all four of Earth's spheres if possible.

12 How are Earth s Spheres Interac4ng? Plants (biosphere) draw water (hydrosphere) and nutrients from the soil (geosphere) and release water vapor into the atmosphere. Humans (biosphere) use farm machinery (manufactured from geosphere materials) to plow the fields, and the atmosphere brings precipita4on (hydrosphere) to water the plants. Energy from the sun is stored by plants (biosphere). When humans or animals (biosphere) eat the plants, they acquire the energy originally captured by the plants. Humans expend some of this energy arranging bricks and wood (geosphere and biosphere) into buildings.
