4 EDF group s kilowatt-hour has a low carbon intensity of 82 g of CO 2, whereas the sector average in Europe is 275 g (1). It is even one of the best in the world. In fact, the Group helps keep the average European carbon factor at a relatively low level. Without EDF, it would be one third higher at around 365 g of CO 2 /kwh generated. In France, with 22 g of CO 2, EDF s performance is even better. However, the size of the Group makes it a significant emitter in absolute terms. Combating climate change pushes us to go even further. In early 2018, the Group made the commitment to reduce the CO 2 discharged into the atmosphere from 51 million tons in 2017 to 30 million tons by 2030 (2), which is in keeping with its work towards carbon neutrality by This ambitious programme involves closing down carbon- and oil-fired power plants and further developing renewable generation capacity. This is how it plans to meet the expectations of its customers, investors and funders. It is a commitment that will allow the Group to strengthen its lead position in the low-carbon growth sector without undermining its industrial and financial objectives. 8 The number of people unable to pay their power bill or meet their energy needs continues to grow. In Europe, 50 to 125 million people are in this situation (1). In the United Kingdom, EDF Energy has been examining the issue of fuel poverty for several years and has been working in particular with those households experiencing long-term difficulties in paying their energy bill and finding themselves in a downward spiral of increasing debt. The company first sought to understand the causes of these situations. Then, in liaison with the government, social non-profits and NGOs, it was able to expand the range of online services. The Priority Services website, designed and implemented with a panel of customers, facilitates access to entitlements for the most vulnerable individuals and connects them with the various British organisations providing debt support and budget management services, as well as giving them advice and tips to help reduce their power consumption. Households experiencing hardship can also apply for funds from the EDF Energy Trust, and the Warm Home Discount. In 2017, the services available as well as the new ways customers can report their difficulties resulted in a significant increase in the number of people assisted. 9 Consume better AN XXL CONTRACT TO REVAMP PUBLIC LIGHTING AND REDUCE MEXICO CITY S CARBON FOOTPRINT By 2050, 70% of the world s population will live in cities. Megacities, such as the Mexican capital, are at the crossroads of many challenges: combating climate change, building resilience and becoming more inclusive. Many are already seeking to improve their energy and economic efficiency, as well as create solutions to enhance their appeal. Public lighting, which accounts for 40% of cities electricity consumption, is one area where they can cut spending, reduce CO 2 emissions, improve personal safety and highlight architectural heritage. For these reasons, Mexico City selected Citelum, an EDF subsidiary, to rethink its entire public-lighting system. Since then, 37,000 light points have been renovated and artistic illumination has been installed on 35 historic monuments, such as the Angel of Independence on the Paseo de la Reforma. The city s energy bill has been reduced by 44% for the renovated facilities, and the street light failure rate has dropped from 59% to 0.9%. A new contract has been signed, raising the total number of renovated light points to 94,000, of which 12,500 will use LEDs. Citelum is also introducing Muse, its urban space collaborative management platform used to determine the location of public facilities, adjust lighting remotely, plan maintenance and provide real-time reliable KPIs. 14 RULE OF NINE BOOKLET 2 CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY 15

11 9. A SOLAR FARM LEAVING IT TO NATURE Renowned worldwide for its biodiversity, French Guiana has vast wetlands that are home to unique plant and animal life. In order to ensure maximum protection for these zones, EDF, the Coastal Conservation Authority and DEAL (French Guiana Department for the Environment, Development and Housing) have created in Rémire-Montjoly the most compact possible solar farm. To limit its footprint and protect the territory s ecological continuity, its 50,000 solar panels have been skilfully installed tightly together and set at an angle in the form of a roof without undermining their efficiency. As a result, 20% less surface area is occupied, and no infrastructure has been installed in three areas that are home to pripris, the region s typical freshwater floating marshes, to the great delight of frogs, butterflies, reptiles and a host of plant life.
