Hrizn2020 Infrmatin Days n Public-Private Partnerships Brkerage event 16 Octber 2015 Emilie Bannier Emilie.bannier@itc.uji.es APPLICATION OF NANOFILTRATION AS A SMART TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE INDUSTRIAL WATER MANAGEMENT ACROSS RELEVANT MANUFACTURING SECTORS IN EUROPE (NANOWATER)

Institut de Tecnlgía Cerámica Asciación de Investigación de las industrías cerámicas (ITC-AICE) The Technlgical Institute fr Ceramic (ITC) is a research centre created by agreement between the Ceramic Industry Research Assciatin (AICE) and University Jaume I (UJI) f Castellón (Spain). ITC-AICE capabilities and research interests include ntably: Smart manufacturing and prcess cntrl Resurce Efficiency, waste recvery and waste management Energy Efficiency and heat recvery Envirnmental technlgies (water treatment, air quality, Life Cycle Assessment) Simulatin f prcesses and materials Occupatinal safety and health Standardizatin 2

PROJECT IDEA Title: Applicatin f nanfiltratin as a smart technlgy t imprve industrial water management acrss relevant manufacturing sectrs in Eurpe (NANOWACER) Prject idea: The main bjective is t achieve maximum ptimizatin in the water management in manufacturing industries by applying nanfiltratin techniques using ceramic industry experience. The prject fcuses t prmte water treatment t increase the amunt f purified wastewater in the prductin prcess, fr a better cnservatin fr an ptimal usage lately, increasing the business efficiency. Tpic: SPIRE Systematic appraches fr resurce-efficient water management systems in prcess industries 3

Relatin with the SPIRE Radmap: PROJECT IDEA THE RELEVANT KEY COMPONENT / KEY ACTION: Key Cmpnent Feed KA 1.1: Enhancing the availability and quality f existing resurces KA 1.2: Optimal valrisatin f waste, residue streams and recycled end-f-life materials as feed KA 1.3: Optimal and integrated (re) use f water Key Cmpnent Waste2Resurce KA 4.1: Systems apprach: understanding the value f waste streams KA 4.2: Technlgies fr separatin, extractin, srting and harvesting f gaseus, liquids and slid waste streams KA 4.3: Technlgies fr (pre)treatment f prcess and waste streams (gaseus, liquids, slids) fr re-use andrecycling 4

EXPECTED IMPACT 1. NANOWACER aims are in line with different EC plicies and initiatives, such as: Eurpe 2020 Flagship Initiative A resurce-efficient Eurpe Eurpe 2020 Flagship Initiative Innvatin Unin Directive 76/464/EEC - Water pllutin by discharges f certain dangerus substances Eurpean Innvatin Partnership n Water (EIP Water), Water reuse and recycling and Water and wastewater treatment Water-energy nexus 2. Impact n the cmpetitiveness f SMEs: Grwth in sustainability due t imprvements in waste water management 3. NANOWATER transfer f knwledge t ther industrial sectrs 4. Impact n new markets pprtunities in waste-water treatment (NF membranes) 5. Impact n the emplyment grwth in existing and new pssible SMEs 5

EXPECTED IMPACT All impacts have been cnsidered in term f SPIRE bjectives: Reductin f the water cnsumptin in relevant manufacturing prcesses ( >20%) Lwer wastewater prductin (reductin f at least 30%) Minimisatin f the Water ftprint as a result f an increase in wastewater recycling and reuse Lwer energy cnsumptin (reductin f at least 15%) due t the use materials and energy with less envirnmental impact, e.g. renewables r waste as inputs fr prductin prcesses New technlgies develpment: Intrductin f new and cleaner technlgies which imprves existing prcesses in terms f material, resurce and energy efficiency 6

EXISTING PROJECT CONSORTIUM COORDINATOR: ITC-AICE (Spain) PARTNERS: - RTOs frm different sectrs (textil, fd, membranes, ceramic) and cuntries (France, Italy, Turkey, Spain) - INDUSTRIAL PARTNERS 1 Ceramic cmpany (Spain) 1 Frit cmpany (Italy) 1 Plastic cmpany (Belgium) 1 Membrane cmpany (France) 1 Fd cmpany (Turkey) 1 Textil cmpany (Spain) - Other partners 2 Public authrities (Spain and Italy) 1 Eurpean Business assciatin (Belgium) 7

LOOKING FOR PARTNERS - NANOWATER cnsrtium needs t include new partners, especially: Other cmpanies and/r RTOs frm fd, textil and plastic sectrs Cmpanies and RTOs frm manufacturing sectrs intensive in water and willing t apply nanfiltratin fr wastewater treatment - NANOWATER cnsrtium can als jin anther cnsrtium with cmplementary skills, such as: Cnsrtium wishing t implement nanfiltratin as anther pssible wastewaster treatment methd Cnsrtium wishing t implement a case-study in the ceramic industry 8
